No. 22 Florida State Shuts Down Charleston Southernm 16-0

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Righthander John Bentley surrendered just one hit in seven shutout innings as No. 22 Florida State (7-5) defeated Charleston Southern (4-2), 16-0, in front of 1,249 fans at Dick Howser Stadium in the Seminoles' home opener.

Bentley retired the first 10 batters and did not allow a hit through 6 1/3 innings pitched. He struck out three in the outing earning his first win of the season.

Catcher Jeremy Salazar led the Seminoles offensively with a two-run home run in the third inning and a three-run double in the seventh for a total of five RBI.

First baseman Kevin Cash belted his second home run of the season, a two-run shot to left centerfield, in the first inning to give Florida State a 2-0 lead that the Seminoles would not relinquish.

Third baseman Jose Zabala contributed two hits and three RBI and centerfielder Brian Cox was 3-for-3 with one RBI on the day.

Righthander Mark Cisar (2-1) gave up nine runs on 11 hits and five walks in 6 1/3 innings pitched in the loss.

Florida State's 16 runs and 16 hits today were both season highs. The shutout is the Seminoles second of the season.

The Seminoles face Charleston Southern again tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. The game will be televised live on the Sunshine Network.
