Tallahassee, Fla. - No. 24 Florida State (4-3) used a strong performance from starter Eddie Cannon to defeat Jacksonville (2-2) by a final score of 8-3 at Dick Howser Stadium Monday afternoon. Cannon (2-0), a senior right-hander, tied a career-high with nine strikeouts and only allowed one hit in six scoreless innings of work. Eddy Martinez-Esteve and Gibbs Chapman helped the Seminoles jump out to a 5-0 lead with home runs in the bottom of the first inning.

Martinez-Esteve and Chapman each belted two-run home runs and Ryne Malone added an RBI-single as the Seminoles batted around in the first to take a commanding 5-0 lead. Shane Robinson led off with a walk and scored on Martinez-Esteve's homer off the scoreboard in left. After a Derrick Smith double, Chapman followed with a towering home run to right. Bryan Zech reached on a bunt single and eventually came around to score on Malone's base hit to right.

FSU added two more runs in the seventh to take a 7-0 lead. Robinson led off the inning with a single and moved to third thanks to a pair of wild pitches. After a Stephen Drew walk, Robinson scored when Jacksonville first baseman Gordie Gronkowski's failed pickoff attempt of Drew sailed high past the second baseman. Drew would later score on Marinez-Esteve's single to right center.

JU cut the lead to 7-3 with three runs in the top of the eighth. With Mark Sauls on in relief of Cannon, an RBI-double from Daniel Murphy and two RBI-singles from Pete Clifford and Joe Steward brought the Dolphins within four.

FSU added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth when Brant Peacher was hit by pitch with the bases loaded.

Chapman led the Seminoles offensively, going 3-for-3 with a two-run homer. Martinez-Esteve (2-for-4) and Derrick Smith (2-for-3) added two hits apiece. Martinez-Esteve tied a season-high with three RBI and also had a two-run home run.

Right-hander Brett Nagy (0-1) suffered his first loss of the season for the Dolphins. Nagy worked six innings and gave up five runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and two walks. All five runs charged to Nagy came in the first inning.

Florida State will host Oral Roberts this weekend, February 20-22, in a three-game series at Dick Howser Stadium. Game times are set for Friday at 3:30 p.m., Saturday at 2:00 p.m. and Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
