Florida State Baseball Drops First Game to Notre Dame, 10-1

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fl. -- The No. 23 Florida State Seminoles dropped their opening day game to Notre Dame, 10-1, in the ACC Baseball Blast at the Walt Disney World Sports Complex.
Notre Dame got off to a 4-0 start as they put two runs on the board in each of the first two innings. Third baseman Brant Ust sparked the Irish with an RBI-single in the first and drove in a run with a sacrafice fly in the second inning.
The Irish extended their lead in the fourth inning as first baseman Dan Leatherman led off with a solo home run. Seminiole pitchers Chris Chavez and John Bentley walked the bases loaded with two outs before rightfielder Jeff Felker hit a fly ball to centerfield that was lost in the lights. Notre Dame cleared the bases on Felker's double to give the Irish an 8-0 lead.
Freshman third baseman Brett Groves doubled to rightfield driving in rightfielder Brian Cox to give the Seminoles their first run.
Florida State righthander Chris Chavez (0-1) gave up seven runs on eight hits in 3 2/3 innings in the loss. Notre Dame righthander Alex Shilliday (1-0) struck out six batters as he pitched five innings of shutout ball and allowed just one hit.
It is the first time the Seminoles have lost an opening day game since FSU dropped a 3-2 decision to Georgia Southern in 1981. Notre Dame earned its firsSt opening day win since the 1994 season when the Irish defeated Tulane, 8-2.
