Luke Gunn Takes Home ACC Performer Of The Week Honors For Second Time This Season

Oct. 6, 2008

GREENSBORO, N.C. − Florida State senior cross country runner Luke Gunn (Derby, England/Birmingham) has earned Atlantic Coast Conference Performer of the Week honors for his efforts at the Notre Dame Invitational on October 3. Gunn also took the league honor when he won the Virginia Tech Invitational earlier in the season.

Gunn finished fourth in the 8K event, posting a time of 23:35, which is a new Florida State record for that distance and is the best time recorded by an ACC runner over the last three seasons. Gunn took down Andrew Lemoncello’s previous school record time of 23:43, which was set during the 2005 campaign.

The men won the Notre Dame Invitational with 81 points, beating 24 teams; including 10 opponents that were either nationally-ranked or receiving votes in last week’s USTFCCCA coaches’ poll. The men were able to down league foe North Carolina (finished fifth) and host Notre Dame (finished sixth), who tied with in-state rival Florida.

“I am very excited for Luke. This is a great honor considering that he now owns the fastest-ever Seminole 8k run,” men’s cross country head coach Bob Braman said. “Not only is that the fastest time in our program’s history, but it also is the fastest in the league this year as well as over the past three seasons. His ability to race this well early in the season shows that he is currently on pace to earn All-American honors by the end of the year.”

One of the nation’s premier races is up next for the men’s and women’s cross country teams when they head to the NCAA Pre-Nationals race on October 18 in Terre Haute, Ind. The meet, hosted by Indiana State, is run on the Lavern-Gibson Championship Cross Country Course, the site of this year’s National Championship race to be held on November 24.
