Special Olympics 1K & 5K Run/Walk Fundraising Event

Jan. 30, 2007

PHOTO GALLERY FROM THE EVENT!!

Despite the cold temperatures, the Special Olympics 1K and 5K Fundraising Run/Walk kicked off on Saturday, January 27th, at Mike Long Track. This year's event raised approximately $2,000 to help local athletes train and compete. The Special Olympics is an organization committed to empowering children and adults with intellectual disabilities to become physically fit, productive, and respected members of society through sport training and competition. Nearly 30 Florida State student-athletes took part in this year's fundraiser to contribute to the success of the program and provide support to those who participated.

The enthusiastic Seminoles helping in this weekend's race represented a number of teams including Track and Field, Cross Country, Volleyball, Women's Basketball, Softball, and Football. Many of Florida State's finest ran alongside participants and encouraged them around the course through the finish line while others took part in the awards ceremony following both races. Although many members of the FSU track and field teams were heading to Gainesville for the UF Diet Pepsi Challenge indoor meet, they took the time to stop by the track to cheer on the participants of the 1K race before making a run for the bus.

The children and adults with intellectual disabilities who participate in Special Olympics develop greater self-confidence, show enthusiasm as well as courage, and gain memorable experiences by taking part in events such as the run/walk. This time, those participants gave Florida State's student-athletes a few memorable experiences of their own.

Much thanks to Lisa Grossman and Brandi Stuart in Student Services for providing the event recap and photos!
