MIAMI, Fla. – It was a storybook finish Thursday for Florida State in the first day of the 2009 ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Cobb Stadium on the campus of the University of Miami as senior Steeve Gabart, a Miami native, capped things off with a first-place finish in the 10,000m run.  Gabart, who ran high school track at North Miami Senior and attended an NAIA and junior college before heading to Florida State, hadn’t competed in front of his mother for five years but did so Thursday night with an exciting victory.

“It was big for me,” Gabart said. “Coming out of high school, I didn’t go D-1; I had to take the rough route but Coach (Braman) took a chance on me and this was a great way to be able to repay him.  I love FSU!  It was the first time ever that my mom got to watch me compete in college.  It just feels good.”

With four top four finishes, including Gabart’s victory in the 10K which scored 10 points, and a fourth-place showing by senior Pelle Rietveld (Zoetermeer, Netherlands) after part one of the decathlon, the Florida State men’s track and field team finds itself in second place with 28 points – just two points behind leader Virginia.

“It was awesome,” Florida State head coach Bob Braman said about Gabart’s performance. “Steeve was far from the favorite but he just wouldn’t give up and powered through and won by a foot. He was just incredible, incredible.

“This just ended what was already a fantastic day for the Seminoles.”

Junior Travis Whitfield (Jay, Fla.) and senior Matt Wernke (Tallahassee, Fla.) placed second and fourth, respectively, in the hammer throw, scoring 13 points for the Seminoles.  Senior Bryan Howard (Warminster, Pa.) added five points with a fourth-place finish in the javelin.

Only junior Caila Coleman (Tallahassee, Fla.) competed for the Florida State women on Thursday with a 154-00.00 for an 11th place overall mark in the hammer throw.

Part two of the decathlon gets underway Friday morning at 11:00 as Rietveld gets things started for the Seminoles in day two of the 2009 ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships.  Field events begin at 1 p.m. while the running events start at 3 p.m.

Live coverage of the Championships will be available online at ACCSelect.com on Friday and Saturday.  Friday’s action will be available from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. while Saturday’s coverage will run from 4-8 p.m.
