Getting to Know : Jack Deedrick - Tampa, Fla. - Distance Free

When did you realize that you were going to specialize in distance races?

"I started swimming competitively when I was four, so when I was either 11 or 12 years old. That's when I started to get serious about swimming and my coaches told me that the best way to get into school to swim was through distance races because there usually is a lack of distance swimmers and that would be my best shot of swimming in college."

When did you know you wanted to come to Florida State?

"It was pretty soon after my trip. It was just the right combination of athletics and academics."

What is your greatest FSU moment?

"It was hearing my named called for the ACC team my freshman year. That was exciting and being out with the guys in general thoughout my four years."

What is your best swimming moment?

"The end of last year when I finally broke 4:30 in the 500 free. It had been about four years since I've gone a best time in that race and I finally did it and knowing that I put in a lot of work and seeing the result was worth it."

Do you have any pre-meet rituals?

"Nothing really exciting. I just make sure to go to bed early. I have my specific warm up, but other than that, I don't have anything."

What is your favorite thing to do outside of swimming?

"Watch baseball. I'm a huge Rays fan. I like to hang out with my friends too."

If you had to be a superhero, who would you chose and why?

"Charles Xavier. Professor X. X-Men. For sure. He can move things with his mind and read minds."

What is your favorite meal?

"Garlic mashed potatoes and steak that my mom makes."

What is your dream job?

"An accountant for any of the major companies, but any accounting job will do out of college."

If you're stuck in an elevator on campus, which teammate would you rather be stuck with?

"Kyle Doxtater. He's one of my roommates, so obviously we get along and we won't freak out in a closed tight space."

Who is your favorite athlete?

"Muhammad Ali. He never stopped and he never quit."

Facebook or Twitter?

"Twitter. It used to be Facebook, but now it's Twitter."

Since it's Halloween, what was your best Halloween costume?

"When I was younger, my mom made an Ash Ketchum from Pokemon. That was probably my best costume."
