Sept. 26, 2013
TALLAHASSEE, Fla.- The Florida State swimming teams will open the 2013-14 season on Friday at the Pinch A Penny All-Florida Invitational in Gainesville, Fla. The three-day (Sept. 27-29), prelim/final formatted competition is hosted by the University of Florida at the O'Connell Center.
"We've only been training a couple of weeks, but we're up for the test," first-year head coach Frank Bradley said. "I'm excited to see the whole team in competition. The biggest challenge for our swimmers is to race as hard as they can and as fast as they can, even though they're under the stress of training."
In addition to FSU and the host team Florida, Miami, Florida Gulf Coast, Florida Southern, North Florida and Nova Southeastern will all be competing.
"We're really excited to have our first meet with Frank as our coach," senior Hannah Wilson said. "We prove ourselves every day in practice. I think we're just ready to represent FSU with all the hard work we've put in and to not only show our coaches what we can do, but the state of Florida."
The morning prelim sessions for Friday begin at 10 a.m. with finals following at 7 p.m. Prelims for Saturday and Sunday will start at 9 a.m. with finals beginning at 4 p.m.
"We're looking forward the whole team racing," senior Paul Murray stated. "As a team, we're in a different state than we've been in the past couple years - aerobically, we're all a little higher than last few seasons. This meet gives the team a great opportunity to figure out where we are in the season. I know most of us have a lot of swims ahead this weekend, so it gives us the chance to show what we've got."
The meet mocks the NCAA Championships format, with Friday's session containing the 200 free relay, 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free, 1-meter diving and the 400 medley relay.
In addition to the meet, the Gators will be collecting new and unused items to be sent to deployed U.S. Troops. The first 250 fans that donate will receive a t-shirt.
