Garnet and Gold Clash

Sept. 20, 2012

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –  The men’s and women’s Florida State swimming and diving teams will compete in their second and final exhibition contest on Friday, Sept. 21 in the Garnet versus Gold match up at 3 p.m. at the Morcom Aquatics Center.

“I’m looking forward to Friday,” head coach Neil Harper said. “The FSU Pentathlon tests their speed in the short events and in every stroke with a little bit of endurance at the end. The Garnet versus gold will give the kids a chance to compete in their top two events.”

The Seminole swimmers are coming off their annual FSU Pentathlon which took place last Friday, Sept. 14 with sophomores Kaitlyn Dressel and Juan Sequera scoring the highest point totals for each of the men’s and women’s teams.  In addition, senior Mark Weber set a new FSU Pentathlon record in the 50 free with a time of 20.30, while junior Ashley Hicks tied the 100 back record at 57.15.

The Garnet versus Gold will have swimmers and divers divided up into two teams for both the men and women.  The swimmers will race in a 16 event format, while the divers will compete in a tailored competition of springboard, platform and possibly synchronized events.

“This is a first look at a real dual meet without any outside competition,” Harper said.  “We will see where our fitness levels are at this point in the season. With the Pentathlon, some of our swimmers aren’t sprinters, so we’ll get those kids into more of their specialties with the Garnet versus Gold .  It will be great to watch them swim primary events.”
