Noles Fair Well at Southern Sectional

July 14, 2014

ORLANDO - Rising senior Juan Sequera along with former Florida State swimmers Pavel Sankovich and Jared Pike picked up individual event wins at the 2014 Speedo Champions Series - Southern Sectional event which was held at the YMCA Aquatic Center in Orlando.

The four-day meet ran from July 10-13 and featured 776 qualifying athletes, 32 of which were affiliated with FSU.  Among those swimmers, 21 contributed to their teams total by placing within the top 16 of their events. Ten club teams fielded Florida State swimmers, with the majority racing for Club Seminole, who took sixth place as a combined team with a total of 364 points.

"I was very happy with the meet," head swimming coach Frank Bradley said. "With the way we've been training and hitting the weights this summer I was very pleased with our races."

Highlighting the meet was the men's 100m breast as the Seminoles swept the event. Pike won the event with a time of 1:02.41 touching ahead of Sequera, who was second (1:03.44). Rising sophomore Jason Coombs represented the Blue Dolphins and placed third with a time of 1:03.63.

Sequera won the 200m breast by a near two-second margin, turning in a time of 2:17.48, while Pike placed third (2:20.66) and Coombs was ninth (2:20.82). Sequera also swam in two other `A' finals, placing third in the 400 IM (4:29.39) and fifth in the 200 IM (2:04.09).  Coombs added a seventh place finish in the 100 free (52.07).

"That breaststroke group really showed up," Bradley said. "Even though Jared graduated, they're still a fun group to watch. I was very happy with their efforts this weekend."

Sankovich swam in the `A' final in three races, winning the 100m fly with a time of 52.88 finishing in front of rising senior Connor Knight and junior Cole Hensley. Knight represented North Palm Beach and was third in both the 100m (54.19) and 200m (2:02.43) fly events, while Henlsey was fifth in the 100m (55.18) for the Blue Dolphins.

In addition to his 100m fly win, Sankovich took silver in the 100m back (55.68) and added an eighth place finish in the 50 free (23.78).

"Pavel is right where he needs to be," Bradley said. "He's gearing up for the European Championships next month and I'm anxious to see what he'll do."

Rising sophomore Jason McCormick represented Boca Raton Swim Team and took silver in the 50 free with a time of 23.05. He also placed fifth in the 100m free with a mark of 51.27.

Former Seminole Mateo De Angulo also turned in a pair of top-eight finishes. He first secured bronze in the 200m free with a time of 1:51.45 before placing sixth in the 400m free (4:00.94).

The women also produced a successful meet, with rising junior Sami Pochowsi and sophomore Chelsea Britt competing in a pair of `A' finals a piece.

Pochowski placed fourth in the 100m breast with a time of 1:12.01 and added a seventh place finish in the 100m free (57.87).

Britt took bronze in the 100m fly, clocking a 1:01.09. She was fifth in the 200m distance with a time of 2:18.73.

Incoming freshman Natalie Pierce caught the attention of Coach Bradley with her sixth place finish in the 100 breast (1:12.58) after posting a career best in her prelim swim of 1:11.84.

"She's going to be a great addition for us," Bradley said. "That breaststroke group, both ladies and gentlemen were outstanding this weekend. I was very happy with them."
