TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The women’s 10-meter synchronized diving team of Amy Cozad (Indianapolis, Ind./Tallahassee, Fla.) and Katrina Young (Shoreline, Wash./Tallahassee, Fla.) finished third in voting for the United States Olympic Committee’s Team of the Month for May, the USOC announced Friday, June 6.
Cozad and Young won the silver medal in women’s synchronized 10-meter at the FINA Grand Prix in San Juan, Puerto Rico. In their first international competition as a synchro team, they scored 293.16 points to finish second to the Chinese team of Ren Qian and Siyi Ju. The Americans were in third place through three rounds of dives but scored 70.20 points on their front 3 1/2 pike in round four to move ahead of the Australian team of Melissa Wu and Rachel Bugg. Cozad and Young then closed out their list with 68.16 points on a back 2 ½ with 1 ½ twists in the final round to win the silver medal.
Track and field’s 4×400 meter women’s relay team was named the Team of the Month. Triathlete Gwen Jorgensen was recognized as the Female Athlete of the Month, with Male Athlete of the Month honors going to Paralympic track and field athlete Raymond Martin.
Each National Governing Body may nominate one female, one male and one team per discipline. A voting panel selects the winners from the pool of nominees with online fan voting via Twitter accounting for 10 percent of the total vote.
