FSU Alums Among Top Swimmers in Charlotte

May 19, 2014

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -  In one of the biggest USA Swimming meets of the season, Mateo De Angulo, Pavel Sankovich and Mark Weber - three former members of the Florida State men's swimming and diving team swam in the top heats of at least one event at the Arena Grand Prix at Charlotte.  The meet was held at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center from May 15-18.

The fifth of six Grand Prix events was broken down to "A" and "B" prelim heats, while the top 32 swimmers qualified for four heats of finals.

"Those guys had some solid swims this weekend," FSU head coach Frank Bradley said. "It's a great start to the summer season and it shows that training is having a desired effect on their performance."

Sankovich made his presence known during Friday's prelim session when he turned in the top time of 53.23 in the 100 fly ahead of 22-time Olympic medalist Michael Phelps (53.26). However, Phelps won the battle in finals (52.13) while Sankovich took silver with a time of 52.72.

"That was a great race for Pavel," Bradley said. "For him to be in that situation and race well is a very good sign."

On Saturday, Sankovich placed eighth in the 100 back (56.12) before tying for sixth place in the 50 fly (24.36).

Grondo, Belarus native will gear up for the European Championships, which will be held from August 18-24 in Berlin.

De Angulo turned in a pair of top-eight performances in the distance races. In Saturday's 400 free, De Angulo was eighth with a final time of 3:57.73 before touching in sixth in Sunday's 1500 free with a mark of 15:47.86.

The Cali, Colombia native also swam the 200 free and placed 18th, posting a time of 1:52.70.

"I was very happy with Mateo's races," Bradley said. "That was one of the best in-season meets of his career and it's a great starting point for this summer."

De Angulo will head back to Colombia for nationals, which will be held from July 23-27, however his main event of the year will take place in November at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Veracruz, Mexico.

While training with SwimMAC Carolina, Weber swam in the championship final of the 100 free touching in eighth with a final time 51.21 after posting his career best in prelims of 50.77.

Weber was 11th in both the 50 free and the 50 fly on Saturday. He first posted a time just off his career best at 23.20 in the 50 free before closing the session with a personal top time of 24.54 in the 50 fly.

"It felt good to swim best times," Weber said. "I will swim a few other meets in the summer before focusing on Nationals in August."

Weber will travel to Irvine, Calif. for the 2014 Phillips 66 National Championships, which are held August 6-10 at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Complex.

Three members of the 2014 signing class also competed at the meet. Calvin Bryant finished 15th in the 800 free (8:23.86) before taking 16th in the 400 free (4:03.37).  Connor Kalisz and Trevor Hine represented North Baltimore Aquatic Club and competed in several races during the "B" flights of the meet.
