TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida State track and field team wrapped up their final dual meet on Saturday afternoon before heading to the ACC Outdoor Championships in Raleigh, NC next weekend. The Seminoles compiled 21 individual victories on the day, along with three relay wins. The Tribe's Courtney Wright and Patrick Gerberich posted qualifying berths to the NCAA Regional Championships, bringing Florida State's regional qualifying season total to 28 individuals and four relay teams.
Junior Courtney Wright won the men's long jump competition with a personal best mark of 24' 1.75" (7.36m). Fellow teammates Ricky Argro placed third at 23' 11.5" (7.30m) and Kolby Jones finished fourth with a mark of 23' 10.25" (7.27m).
In the men's pole vault competition, senior Patrick Gerberich tied his personal best in the event with a mark of 16' 0.75" (4.90m), good for first place. Brooks Weber came in second (15' 1"), while Jared Sweetster placed fourth (14' 7.25").
Junior Dorian Scott won the men's shot put competition with a regional qualifying mark of 60' 9.5" (18.53m). Scott's throw places him second all-time in Florida State history in the shot put event. Dan Royal finished in third with throw of 49' 3.5" (15.02m).
The women's 100m hurdle event belonged to the Seminoles as they took the top three spots. Senior Kim Jones led the way with a first place finish, establishing a collegiate best time of 13.09. She sits second all-time in Florida State history in the event, trailing former Seminole and Olympian Kim Batten by only .03 seconds. LaKendra McColumn (13.96) and Deanna Lane (14.38) finished in second and third place, respectively. Danyne Brown took the men's 110m hurdles posting a regional qualifying and personal best time of 14.16. Senior Gary Visser finished in third at 15.04.
Junior Sean Campbell accumulated a personal best time in the 400m dash, winning the event at 47.16. Cedrick Robinson placed third at 47.70, while Tony Martin, who competed for the first time in this event, placed fourth in a time of 48.09. In the women's 400m, senior Laura Gerber finished first in a regional qualifying time of 52.97. Marla Jackson came in second at 57.03.
A pair of freshman dominated the triple jump on Saturday afternoon with Latoya Legree and Rafeeq Curry. Legree won the women's event establishing a personal best mark of 42' 7" (12.98m), while Curry won the men's competition with a mark of 50' 0.75" (15.26m).
The Garnet and Gold swept the top six spots in the women's 200m dash with Kim Walker and Tamara Campbell establishing personal best marks of 24.15 and 24.40, respectively. Rounding out third through sixth place were Marla Jackson (25.02), Sharneka Brown (25.12), Denise Daniels (25.23) and Kim Adams (25.24).
The Tribe won three of four relay events on the day, taking the women's 4x100m and 4x400m, while the men placed one, two in the 4x400m. The women's 4x100m relay team of Kim Jones, Evelyne Niako, Shauna Quinn, and Kim Walker recorded a regional qualifying and season best time of 45.43 to win the event.
Other regional qualifiers included in the women's long jump: Kim Jones, first (19' 4.25"); women's shot put: Makiba Batten, first (48' 1.25"); men's hammer: Josh Bowling, first (186' 4"); men's 400m hurdles: Sharneka Brown, first (51.79); women's pole vault: Lacy Janson, first (13' 8.25"); men's 400m hurdles: Danyne Brown, first (51.79).
Seminoles' posting personal best times on the final day of competition at the Seminole Track Invitational included in the women's 800m: Sydney Mondragon, first (2:15.60); men's 1500m: Kevin Cook, second (3:51.22); men's 100m dash: Kolby Jones, fifth (10.76).
The Florida State track and field team will next prepare for the ACC Outdoor Championships to be held at NC State University, April 18-19. The men's squad will head to Raleigh looking to defend their outdoor title and complete the season sweep by winning both the ACC Indoor and Outdoor Championships. The women are set to improve on their second place finish from a year ago and win the outdoor championship for the first time since 2000.
