Paul Spangler begins his third season as the assistant coach for the men’s and women’s cross country and distance teams in 1999-2000.
Spangler came to Florida State after an accomplished four-year career at the University of Alabama. At FSU, he has assisted in the coaching of all distance runners while also handling the recruiting responsibilities for the women’s program.
After originally walking on at Alabama, Spangler went on to earn a scholarship and numerous honors for the Crimson Tide. Spangler was named to the All-Southeastern Conference and All-District teams in cross country while also recording the fifth fastest indooor 5K mark and the tenth fastest outdoor 10K mark in Alabama school history on the track. An All-SEC academic team selection, he graduated with a degree in sports management.
A native of Brooksville, Fla., Spangler began his distance career at Hernando High School. He won the state two-mile title as a junior and was the runner-up as a senior. In cross country, he was a two-time champion at district and conference meets while also earning academic all-conference status.
Spangler, 25, is currently pursuing his master’s degree in sports administration. He continues to run competitively in his spare time and also enjoys cycling.
