Mike Fuentes finished his Florida State career in 1981 by being named the Golden Spikes Award Winner as college baseball's top player. The distinction followed his selection as an All-American as both a junior and senior and back-to-back Metro Conference Tournament MVP honors. He became the first Seminole in history to hit .400 for a season when he batted .408 as a junior while leading FSU into the 1980 College World Series. As a senior he had 27 home runs, 81 RBI and a .360 batting average. His story book career included breaking Bob Horner's record with 64 career home runs and he finished with a .377 career batting average and 182 RBI with just five at bats total in his first season.
