Track & Field Day At The Boys & Girls Club Of The Big Bend
May 4, 2007
Nearly 200 children at the Boys and Girls Club of the Big Bend received a spring training session from Florida State University's Track and Field Team on March 5th. Student-athletes from the men and women's squad came out to educate the children on race preparation, sportsmanship, proper nutrition, and techniques, in preparation for the Springtime Tallahassee Run.
The children of the Boys and Girls Club will be able to participate in the local event on March 31st with help from the Gulf Winds Track Club and Florida State's Faculty Athletic Representative, Dr. Joseph Beckham. Dr. Beckham, an active member of the Boys and Girls Club of the Big Bend's Board of Directors, presented the organization with a generous donation to go toward the purchase of shirts for all of the children participating. The Gulf Winds Track Club also made a generous donation which will cover the registration fees of the children who will be running.
The Track and Field athletes were able to spend a couple of hours with the little runners and demonstrate various techniques. Sharif Small stood tall over the crowd throwing discuss and shot while Matt Frith gave instruction. Members of the women's sprints and relays group showed off their skills which recently earned them a first place finish in the 4x400 meter relay at the ACC Indoor Championships. The training session ended with small group sessions led by the Seminoles where they educated the children on race strategies, staying healthy, sportsmanship, and teamwork.
