Florida State Baseball Coach Mike Martin's comments on the season-ending injury sustained by San Francisco Giants' catcher and former Seminole All-American Buster Posey:
"It's just devastating to all of us. I just saw one of the executives of the Giants who showed me the picture. There's no excuse for a guy to get hit when he's not in the batter's box. It's uncalled for. If he's blocking the plate it's a different story."
Martin also said he's confident Posey will do whatever is necessary to return to All-Star ability, citing his passion for the game and tremendous work ethic that extends beyond the playing field.

This offseason, Vince Young has company three to four days a week that, according to a Houston television station, includes Vikings running back Adrian Peterson. "It's been that way," Young said Tuesday. "Adrian and the other guys are here to work. It's a good time out here then we lift together, eat lunch, bond and build chemistry. Keeping that football brotherhood is what it's all about." Young said his surgically repaired thumb is 100 percent, and he's looking forward to the next step in his NFL career, wherever that might be. "I am feeling really good," Young said. "Dr. [Thomas] Hunt in Alabama did a great job getting me back out here. I'm getting my shoulder stronger too. It's always good to throw with the guys and it's helping me a lot."

• 1. at Florida State (Sept. 17): Florida State has eight starters back on either side of the ball and closed out last season on fire, beating SEC East champ South Carolina in the Chick-fil-A Bowl. Oh, and the Seminoles have this game circled and highlighted on their calendars after getting thumped by 30 points in Norman last year.
"Every time I'm working out, I think about Oklahoma," cornerback Greg Reid told ESPN.com a couple of months ago. By winning in Tallahassee, the Sooners will have the inside track to the national title game. But this will be the toughest nonconference test of the Bob Stoops era.

Is this the year Florida State wins another ACC championship and gets back into the discussion for the national title?

3. Florida State Seminoles (Previous ranking: 3)Myriad injuries on the offensive line thwarted FSU's offense during the spring, but quarterback E.J. Manuel looked ready to replace departed starter Christian Ponder on a full-time basis. The Seminoles might also start reaping the rewards of back-to-back nationally ranked recruiting classes. Linebackers Telvin Smith, Christian Jones and Nigel Terrell and safety Lamarcus Joyner looked like big-time impact players on defense. FSU's conference schedule is favorable -- it doesn't play Georgia Tech, North Carolina or Virginia Tech during the regular season -- and a Sept. 17 home game against Oklahoma might determine whether it's a legitimate BCS title contender.

Q: Did you spend much time with the Chiefs before the draft?
RODNEY HUDSON: "I did some at the Combine."
Q: You didn't come to Kansas City at all?
HUDSON: "No sir."
Q: Does this surprise you at all that you wound up here?
HUDSON: "I don't know if it surprised me, I am just excited for the opportunity."
Q: What do you know about the offensive line situation here?
HUDSON: "I don't know anything particularly, I am just trying to come in there and work hard."
Q: What position do you feel is best for you in the NFL, guard or center?
HUDSON: "I don't know. Whatever the coaches ask me to do I am just going to put all of my effort into it and be the best that I can."
Q: Which position do you play best?
HUDSON: "I played left guard at Florida State the most, I have been a four-year starter. I feel like I could play center also. Like I said, I am just going to come in and whatever they ask me to play, do it to the best of my ability."
Q: I read that you worked at a KFC to support your family. Can you tell me a little bit about that?
HUDSON: "Well, my mom was a single parent and my brother went off to college so it was just me and my mom. I got a job and helped out a little bit with some smaller bills."
Q: How long did you work there?
HUDSON: "From 11th till I went to college, so probably a year and a half to two years."
Q: So what did you do?
HUDSON: "I cooked."
Q: So do you cook pretty good chicken?
HUDSON: "Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah."
Q: How do you feel about having done that? Do you look back on that proudly?
HUDSON: "Yeah, it made me a better man. It made me grow up. I took on a lot of responsibility at a young age and it helped me out. It helped me become what I am today."
Q: What is your playing weigh right now?
HUDSON: "I played at Florida State at 285."
Q: Do you want to stay at that weight or bring that up or down? What are they telling you?
HUDSON: "I haven't heard anything specifically yet but whatever they ask me to be, that is what I am going to be."
