Florida State Baseball Coach Mike Martin's comments on the season-ending injury sustained by San Francisco Giants' catcher and former Seminole All-American Buster Posey:

"It's just devastating to all of us. I just saw one of the executives of the Giants who showed me the picture. There's no excuse for a guy to get hit when he's not in the batter's box. It's uncalled for. If he's blocking the plate it's a different story."

Martin also said he's confident Posey will do whatever is necessary to return to All-Star ability, citing his passion for the game and tremendous work ethic that extends beyond the playing field.

Bill Simmons + Macho Man Randy Savage ... need I say more?

    Unpredictably Brilliant

    9
    Florida State Seminoles
    2010 record: 10-4 (6-2 ACC)
Returning starters: 16 (eight offense, eight defense)
Key returnees: RB Jermaine Thomas, OT Andrew Datko, OT Zebrie Sanders, LB Nigel Bradham, CB Greg Reid, CB Xavier Rhodes

    Spring star: QB E.J. Manuel

Spring recap: Because I'm doing this poll a little later than usual, I've gotten a chance to see how many of my colleagues ranked teams after the spring. Some of them really love the Seminoles. Top-five love, even. Jimbo Fisher is building something special in Tallahassee, but I'm not sure Florida State is back to late-90s, baddest-team-in-the-universe mode. Yet. That day doesn't seem far off, though. Fisher has spent the past few years working FSU's offense back into shape, but the hallmark of those late-90s Seminoles teams was an athletic, almost vicious defense. The coaching staff has spent the past few years stockpiling the same type of players Mickey Andrews used to unleash upon the world, and second-year coordinator Mark Stoops now has a deep(ish), athletic group that should be able to hang with elite offenses. The names Telvin Smith, Christian Jones and Lamracus Joyner, already well known to recruitniks, probably will become more familiar to a mainstream audience this season.

The NBA draft lottery was held last night with the Cleveland Cavaliers securing the number one overall pick.  But the real question is where will Florida State junior Chris Singleton go in the draft.  SI.com's Sam Amick has Chris headed to Houston:

The Rockets are well aware that they must improve defensively. Grabbing one of college basketball's best defenders would help on that front, as the void on the perimeter remains after the loss of Shane Battier in a midseason trade with Memphis.

    A Congratulations and Thank You

    | No Comments | No TrackBacks
Here's a played-out pseudo joke that I've been telling since 2002 when I moved from Orlando to Tallahassee for my freshman year at Florida State: "The only reason I came to FSU is because of Deion Sanders."

That may not be 100 percent accurate but a lot of truth is said in jest. And even though I ultimately chose FSU over other schools because of a variety of factors, there is no denying that Sanders is the primary reason I began following the Seminoles back in the late 1980s when I was a kid. It was his flair and other-worldly ability in the garnet and gold that drew me to the 'Noles. He made every play exciting.

I met my wife at Florida State and we had a daughter in Tallahassee. In a weird way, I may have never met her had Sanders not gone to FSU.

Today Sanders, who will forever be considered one of the greatest football players of all time, was finally inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. So here's a heartfelt congratulations to Prime Time.

And an even bigger thank you for being a Seminole.

Osceola and Renegade Featured in NCAA 12

    | No Comments | No TrackBacks
I've got a fever. And no, the only prescription I need is not more cowbell.

It's right around this time every year -- when there is no more football, the NBA playoffs are drawing closer and closer to an end and soon all we will have is a never-ending onslaught of regular-season baseball (seriously, you know you're season is way too long when a star player taking a day off is common practice) -- that I start jonesing for a little EA Sports NCAA Football.

I own a Playstation 3 but all it really happens to be is a glorified DVD/Blu-Ray player. The only game I ever own is NCAA football. I buy it brand new every year and then sell it on Half.com right after the BCS bowl games. It's a cycle that never gets old (except for maybe my wife ... I love you!).

Anyway, each year the game promises new features and updates. And while sometimes the yearly additions lack much in the way of being something truly exciting, NCAA 2012 is likely to be different. This year, EA Sports has smartly added several football traditions that have never been featured before, including the addition of Osceola and Renegade.

Check out this rather long video to see what I am talking about. Actual footage of the game starts at the 1:40 mark and the sheer awesomeness of a Saturday in Tallahassee begins at the 2:30 clip.

    Woods Withdraws From The Players

Seems like things are going from bad to worse for Tiger Woods.  After having a stirring comeback at the Masters he has been sidelined with a knee injury for the past month.

"It's been that way," Young said Tuesday. "Adrian and the other guys are here to work. It's a good time out here then we lift together, eat lunch, bond and build chemistry. Keeping that football brotherhood is what it's all about." Young said his surgically repaired thumb is 100 percent, and he's looking forward to the next step in his NFL career, wherever that might be. "I am feeling really good," Young said. "Dr. [Thomas] Hunt in Alabama did a great job getting me back out here. I'm getting my shoulder stronger too. It's always good to throw with the guys and it's helping me a lot."

The View From Norman - FSU vs. OU

    | No Comments | No TrackBacks
Came across this from Jake Trotter in the Oklahoman newspaper.  They have the Florida State game listed as the toughest game the Sooners will play this season:

    • 1. at Florida State (Sept. 17): Florida State has eight starters back on either side of the ball and closed out last season on fire, beating SEC East champ South Carolina in the Chick-fil-A Bowl.  Oh, and the Seminoles have this game circled and highlighted on their calendars after getting thumped by 30 points in Norman last year.

"Every time I'm working out, I think about Oklahoma," cornerback Greg Reid told ESPN.com a couple of months ago.  By winning in Tallahassee, the Sooners will have the inside track to the national title game. But this will be the toughest nonconference test of the Bob Stoops era.

Every year I take a flyer on a team I think could surprise a lot of people. A year ago it was North Carolina, and if the Tar Heels had gotten everybody on the field (nine NFL draft choices) I might have been right. This year my wild-card team is Florida State. E.J. Manuel will fill in very nicely at quarterback for Christian Ponder. The backfield is deep. The defense is athletic. Did I mention that the Seminoles host Oklahoma on Sept. 17?

    Ponder Headed To Hollywood?

    | No Comments | No TrackBacks
Came across this video of Christian Ponder at a celebrity golf tournament this past weekend.  I will refrain from naming the tournament host based on his allegiance to a certain school in the state of Florida.

One thing that did catch my attention is that if Ponder is going for the tank top look on the golf course he would be the perfect person to play Lincoln Hawk in the remake of "Over The Top"  Watch both videos below and see if you agree.

    Noles Check In At #3

    | No Comments | No TrackBacks
This from the latest Way-Too-Early preseason Top 25 by ESPN.com writer Mark Schlabach:

    3. Florida State Seminoles (Previous ranking: 3)
Myriad injuries on the offensive line thwarted FSU's offense during the spring, but quarterback E.J. Manuel looked ready to replace departed starter Christian Ponder on a full-time basis. The Seminoles might also start reaping the rewards of back-to-back nationally ranked recruiting classes. Linebackers Telvin Smith, Christian Jones and Nigel Terrell and safety Lamarcus Joyner looked like big-time impact players on defense. FSU's conference schedule is favorable -- it doesn't play Georgia Tech, North Carolina or Virginia Tech during the regular season -- and a Sept. 17 home game against Oklahoma might determine whether it's a legitimate BCS title contender.

    Draft Q&A: Rodney Hudson

    | No Comments | No TrackBacks
    Courtesy KCChiefs.com

Q: Did you spend much time with the Chiefs before the draft?

RODNEY HUDSON: "I did some at the Combine."

Q: You didn't come to Kansas City at all?

    HUDSON: "No sir."

Q: Does this surprise you at all that you wound up here?

HUDSON: "I don't know if it surprised me, I am just excited for the opportunity."

Q: What do you know about the offensive line situation here?

HUDSON: "I don't know anything particularly, I am just trying to come in there and work hard."

Q: What position do you feel is best for you in the NFL, guard or center?

HUDSON: "I don't know. Whatever the coaches ask me to do I am just going to put all of my effort into it and be the best that I can."

Q: Which position do you play best?

HUDSON: "I played left guard at Florida State the most, I have been a four-year starter. I feel like I could play center also. Like I said, I am just going to come in and whatever they ask me to play, do it to the best of my ability."

Q: I read that you worked at a KFC to support your family. Can you tell me a little bit about that?

HUDSON: "Well, my mom was a single parent and my brother went off to college so it was just me and my mom. I got a job and helped out a little bit with some smaller bills."

Q: How long did you work there?

HUDSON: "From 11th till I went to college, so probably a year and a half to two years."

Q: So what did you do?

    HUDSON: "I cooked."

Q: So do you cook pretty good chicken?

HUDSON: "Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah."

Q: How do you feel about having done that? Do you look back on that proudly?

HUDSON: "Yeah, it made me a better man. It made me grow up. I took on a lot of responsibility at a young age and it helped me out. It helped me become what I am today."

Q: What is your playing weigh right now?

HUDSON: "I played at Florida State at 285."

Q: Do you want to stay at that weight or bring that up or down? What are they telling you?

HUDSON: "I haven't heard anything specifically yet but whatever they ask me to be, that is what I am going to be."
