Andrew and Kuhlman Cap FSU Beach Volleyball Season in USAV Quarterfinals
HERMOSA BEACH, Calif. – Florida State beach volleyball graduate senior Leigh Andrew and sophomore Brooke Kuhlman advanced to the quarterfinals of the USA Volleyball Collegiate Beach Championship at the Hermosa Beach courts on Friday, wrapping up an outstanding 2017 season for the Seminoles.
Juniors Victoria Paranagua and Vanessa Freire also advanced out of pool play before falling in the round of 16 at the national pairs championship, which featured the 24 top women's pairs competing for a spot on the USA Volleyball collegiate beach national team.
Andrew and Kuhlman finished 3-3 in the tournament, while Paranagua and Freire went 2-3.
Andrew and Kuhlman captured their second win of pool play Friday morning as they knocked off Olivia Powers and Katie Lindelow of LSU, 22-24, 21-18, 18-16. This win brought the Seminole duo to a 2-1 record in Pool D, good enough to advance them to the single elimination stage.
Paranagua and Freire lost for the second time of pool play to Arizona's Witt sisters, 21-15, 13-21, 15-13. The sixth-seeded Noles pair went 1-2 in Pool F, but were chosen as one of the four highest ranked third-place pool finishers to compete in the play-in match.
Paranagua and Freire took on Amy Neal and Jaelyn Greene of TCU in the play-in round. The Garnet and Gold were able to defeat the Horn Frog duo 21-12, 22-20 to advance to the Round of 16.
In the round of 16, Andrew and Kuhlman faced off against South Carolina's Katie Smith and Adrianna Culbert. Florida State's duo outlasted the Gamecocks moving on to the quarterfinals with a 22-20, 21-14 win.
Paranagua and Freire took on reigning national champions Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes from Southern California in the round of 16. The Seminole pair fought hard, but were eliminated, falling 21-12, 21-16.
Andrew and Kuhlman took on the pair of Corrine Quiggle and Brittany Howard from Pepperdine for a chance to move on to the semifinals and play on Saturday. The Noles duo jumped out to an early lead as the took set one, 23-21. They dropped the next two to the Waves, however, and were defeated 21-23, 23-21, 15-12.
Andrew, a transfer from North Carolina, wrapped her one season with the Seminoles with a record of 21-16. Kuhlman, Paranagua and Freire will all return next season for FSU, and will look to lead the Garnet and Gold to a seventh consecutive national championship appearance. The Seminoles finished fourth at the 2017 NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship in Gulf Shores, Ala., last weekend.
