Castren And Metraux To Play In Vagliano Cup Championship
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) – Florida State University golfers Matilda Castren and Morgane Metraux will look to lead Europe to its sixth consecutive victory in the Vagliano Trophy Championship when competition in the event begins on June 30 at the Golf Club of Bogogno in Italy. The European Team will compete against Great Britain and Ireland in four foursomes on June 30 and in eight singles matches on July 1.
The Vagliano Trophy began as a match between Great Britain & Ireland and France in 1931. The event was played annually until 1939 and again after World War II in 1947 and 1949, and it became a biennial event thereafter. Since 1959, the match has been played between GB&I and a team representing the Continent of Europe. The Vagliano Trophy, given by French golfer Andre Vagliano, was last played at Malone Golf Club, Belfast, in 2015 in which the continent of Europe emerged victorious for a fifth consecutive time.
The European team will have a predominantly ACC flair to it as the conference will be represented by Castren (Finland) and Metraux (Switzerland) of Florida State, Virginia Elena Carta of Duke (Italy) and Dewi Weber of Miami (Netherlands). Duke's Leona Maguire is a member of the Great Britain/Ireland team.
Castren, who graduated from Florida State on May 6, 2017 with a Bachelor's Degree in International Affairs, completed her four-year career as one of the greatest golfers in school history. She finished her career with a school-record seven individual victories, a school-record 72.52 stroke average and a school-record 24 top 10 finishes. She was a three-time All-ACC pick and a four-time All-American selection who earned All-American Third-Team honors by GolfWeek as a senior in 2017.
“I am very excited to be playing another team event,” said Castren. “It is an honor for me to represent the continent of Europe. This event will be match play; a format that I like to play so I feel confident going into this week. It will also be my last amateur event, so the goal is to enjoy, have fun and play some good golf.”
Metraux is a two-time All-American selection who earned All-ACC honors for the first time in her career in 2017. She earned All-American Honorable Mention honors from the WGCA and All-American Third Team honors from GolfWeek in 2017 as she helped lead Florida State to one of the greatest seasons in school history. Metraux finished the 2017 season tied for the ACC lead in wins with three (Schooner Fall Classic, Florida State Match-Up, Dickson Intercollegiate) and is one of the top returning collegiate golfers for the 2017-18 season.
