Garnet Fights Back to Defeat Gold
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Seminoles.com) – Facing defeat heading into the third set, the Garnet Team charged back to win three straight in order to win the annual Garnet versus Gold scrimmage 3-2 on Saturday in Tully Gym.
“I was very pleased overall,” FSU head coach Chris Poole said. “We split the teams up pretty evenly on purpose. We wanted to see how the players would produce in this situation and we were able to get a good read.”
Redshirt sophomore middle blocker Sarah Burrington lead a steady attack for Garnet, swinging for 20 kills while hitting for .405 percent in addition to putting up 14 block assists.
Senior setter Sarah Wickstrom put up a double-double, recording 36 assists and 17 digs, while her classmate and fellow captain libero Katie Mosher produced 19 digs.
Also scoring in double-double numbers was junior outside hitter Karlie Hauer, who tallied 13 kills and 10 digs.
Former FSU middle blocker Jordana Price (2007-2009) contributed to the attack with nine kills.
Junior Kiara Wright had a big day at the net for Gold, accounting for 18 block assists, stopping nine alone in the second set. Wright helped Gold achieve 21 total team blocks. She also posted eight kills.
Leading the attack for Gold was sophomore outside hitter Katie Horton, who tallied 16 kills, while freshman Milica Kubura recorded 14. Redshirt junior middle blocker Mercedes Vaughn also scored double-digit kills with 10.
Sophomore setter Hailey Luke had a solid day, amassing 45 assists while freshmen libero Cecilie Woie had 20 digs.
“All of the newcomers played very well,” Poole said. “I was pleased with their production and our hitters as a whole did very well and the blocking was good early. Gold started off on fire those first two sets, but the Garnet Team which consisted of most of the older, veteran players knew how to get back into the match and they were able to execute and win it.”
Gold took the 1-0 lead after holding off a pair of Garnet runs, 25-22.
In the second, Gold held the slight edge 16-14 before the squad closed the set on a 9-2 stretch to take the 2-0 (25-16) lead heading into the break.
Facing defeat, Garnet found its stride and dominated the third set by a score of 25-13, cutting Gold’s lead to 2-1.
In the fourth, Gold jumped out to an 8-2 lead before Garnet strung together a pair of runs, eventually tying the set at 14 before taking over the lead. Garnet held off a late surge by Gold, forcing a fifth set 25-23.
Garnet cruised to a 15-11 win in the fifth, securing the match, 3-2.
“We did what we needed to in this match,” Poole said. “We have a lot of things we want to get accomplished this week before we hit the road.”
