TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Seminoles.com) - Current and future Seminoles will take part in a sectional qualifier for the US Open National Playoffs on June 19-22 at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center on the campus of Florida State University. Redshirt freshman Emily Fanning, incoming freshman Gabby Castaneda and junior transfer Yukako Noi will participate in the four-day tournament.
"We are very excited to be able to host these summer events on our campus," said head coach Jennifer Hyde. "It is a great opportunity to look at the talent of some younger players which gives our program increased exposure during the summer."
The US Open National Playoffs is a series of tournaments that gives any player 14 years of age or older who meets the eligibility requirements the opportunity to qualify for the 2014 US Open. Thirteen USTA sections will run a Sectional Qualifying Tournament to include a men's singles, women's singles and mixed doubles division.
The winner of each Sectional Qualifying Tournament in each division will advance to the US Open National Playoffs Championships. Winners of those Championships will receive a wild card entry to compete in the 2014 US Open Qualifying Tournament on August 19-22 at the USTA Billie Jen King National Tennis Center.
Fanning ended up taking a redshirt season in 2014 after playing in just three matches before sitting out the remainder of the year with an injury. The highly touted New Zealand native went 1-2 in singles and 1-1 in doubles in the early part of the 2014 spring season.
Castaneda signed her National Letter of Intent to come to Florida State in November of 2013 and was listed as a five-star Blue Chip recruit by Tennisrecruiting.net and ranked as the No. 21 recruit in the United States by Babolat.
Noi comes to Florida State after playing the last two seasons at VCU. She was named to the Atlantic 10 First Team in both 2013 and 2014 and was ranked as high as No. 81 in the ITA polls during the 2014 season.
Fanning's first match will be against Bianca Biglione in the Round of 32 on June 20 at 8:00 a.m., while Noi and Castaneda will face off against each other in a Round of 16 match on June 20 at 12:30 p.m.
"It is great that Gabby and Yuka will be competing for the first time here at Florida State this weekend, though it is unfortunate that they have to play each other in the first round. Emily gets to play in her first match since the end of January and I know that she is ecstatic to be back out there competing again."
Former Seminole Amy Sargeant will also participate in the tournament. Sargeant had one of the greatest singles seasons in 2013 as she posted a 30-7 record. Her 81.1 winning percentage ranks second all-time at FSU and her 30 wins are tied for the fourth-most in program history. Sargeant will take on the winner of Leyla Azaeva and Kayla Price in a Round of 16 match on June 20 at 1:30 p.m.
