TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -Cristian Gonzalez Mendez and Dominic Cotrone of the Florida State men's tennis team were named to the 2014 All-ACC Academic Team as announced Thursday by Commissioner John Swofford.
"We're proud of the academic success that our team has shown over the years," said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. "A lot of that is attributed to the great support we have at Florida State. Dr. Kacy King (academic advisor for men's tennis) does a great job of keeping our guys on task. We've taken on difficult majors and have achieved a lot as one of the top teams academically on campus."
After leading the team with an overall 27-8 singles record this past season, Gonzalez Mendez was named to the academic team for the first time in his career. Previously he was named to the 2012 and 2013 ACC Honor Roll and as a 2012 and 2013 ITA All-Academic Scholar-Athlete. He was named to the All-ACC third team this season.
"I feel very honored for not only being recognized for my athletic achievements but also for my academic achievements and all the effort and time I put into it," said Gonzalez Mendez.
Cotrone was named to the All-ACC second team this past season and finished the year with a 20-15 singles record. He finished the season ranked No. 73 in singles play. This is the second year Cotrone was named to the academic team as he was also named to the 2012 and 2013 ACC Honor Roll.
This is the sixth straight season a Seminole has been named to the All-ACC Academic Team which was started in 2007.
To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic Men's Tennis Team, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.
