Soccer Announces 2014 Schedule
June 4, 2014
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida State soccer program announced on Wednesday, June 4 their schedule for the 2014 season. Last year's national finalists will open the season at home on Friday, August 22 against Portland highlighting one of 10 games played inside the friendly confines of the Seminole Soccer Complex this fall.
Krikorian, who enters his 10th season as head coach at Florida State, returns 14 letterwinners and nine starters from last year's squad that played in the national championship game and finished the year ranked No. 2 in the nation. The Seminoles are coming off a third consecutive trip to the College Cup and their second ACC championship in the last three years.
"We are excited as can be for the season to get underway," Florida State head coach Mark Krikorian said. "Once again we have challenged ourselves in the non-conference part of the schedule to prepare us for the ACC and then hopefully beyond. We will start off here against Portland and Minnesota, two very good teams. As we look at the non-conference segment we know it's loaded with quality opponents."
FSU will play 10 of its 18 regular season matches at home this fall. Florida State opens the season riding a 35-game home unbeaten streak, the longest active streak in the nation and the seventh longest streak without a loss at home in NCAA history. Last year, the Seminoles finished with a 16-0-1 record at home and are 102-8-4 all-time at home under Krikorian.
Thirteen teams on this year's schedule recorded nine or more wins a season ago. Eleven schools earned a bid to participate in the 2013 NCAA Tournament, while five of those teams reached the quarterfinal round.
Five of FSU's eight non-conference games will be played at home. Florida State's opening weekend includes home matches against the Pilots on Friday, August 22 and then Minnesota on Sunday, August 24. The other three non-conference home matches include Florida, St. John's and Stetson. This year's road matches includes dates at Oklahoma State (August 29), Oklahoma (August 31) and Connecticut (September 18).
The Seminoles return to a 10-game ACC schedule in 2014 with five matches at home and five more on the road. FSU opens league play on the road at Boston College on Sunday, September 21. The Garnet & Gold will then return to Tallahassee for their conference home opener against Louisville, who joins the ACC this fall, on Thursday, September 25. "We know that if we are playing 10 ACC games, we are going to have 10 good games against very strong opponents," added Krikorian. "Every year we look forward to the challenges that the league schedule presents."
The Seminoles will also host Virginia, Syracuse and Virginia Tech before closing out the 2014 regular season at home against Duke on Friday, October 31. FSU's remaining road schedule in the ACC includes matches at Miami, Pittsburgh, North Carolina and NC State.
The ACC Women's Soccer Championship will be held at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro on November 7 & 9 with the top four teams advancing to play for the conference title.
