Castren Leads Seminoles At Match-Up Tournament
Feb. 14, 2014
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) - Florida State freshman Matilda Castren shot a career-best 68 and holds the individual lead after the first round of the Second Annual Florida State Match-Up at Southwood Golf Course. Castren's career best score has led the Seminoles to a third place team ranking in the 11-team event which continues with the second round on Saturday and the third and final round on Sunday. The Seminoles are only one stroke behind South Carolina and Texas A&M heading into the second round of play.
No. 13 South Carolina and No. 39 Texas A&M are tied for first in the individual standings with identical scores of 293. The Gamecocks are led by two players in the top-10 of the individual standings while the Aggies have three players in the top 10. South Carolina is led by Sarah Schmelzel who is in second place with a 2-under par score of 70 over the first 18 holes. Texas A&M is led by Katerina Ruzickova who is in a tie for third place with a 1-under par score of 71.
The playing partners of Texas A&M and Florida State are in first place in the match-up standings - the aspect of this event which makes it one of the most unique tournaments in all of college golf. The match-up portion of the tournament is determined by taking the best four scores from each of the partners and the lowest scores to make up the match-up partner total. The Aggies and the Seminoles combined for four players in the top 10 and six of the 10 total players in the top 10 of the individual standings.
"We played very well today," said Seminole head coach Amy Bond. "It was a great start. We need to tidy up a few things around the greens and make a few more putts but overall, I am very happy with how all of our girls performed today. We have put ourselves in position for the weekend and it will be fun to watch."
Castren (Espoo, Finland) played her best round of collegiate golf with six birdies and 10 more holes at par golf in the first round. She carded three birdies on her first five holes and was 2 under par as she made the turn to the front of the course. She began her second set of nine holes just as she did her first set of nine holes - with three birdies on her first five holes. Castren was as many as five strokes under par during the round and finished with her 4 under par score of 68. Her score of 68 is the lowest score by a Seminole player during the fall 2013 and spring 2014 seasons.
"I hit good approach shots and putted well," said Castren. "I hit 15 of 18 greens and I had a chance at birdie on just about each of those holes. I was very happy with the way I played today. I left some putts and a couple of shots out there but it's a good score to start the tournament with."
Castren's individual score of 68 is the second lowest single round score in the two-year history of the event. The tournament record is 66 by Rocio Sanchez Lobato of Georgia on February 15, 2013.
Freshman Haley Austin of Mercer recorded her first career hole-in-one on hole No. 6 in Friday's first round. She is in a tie for 12th place in the individual standings with a 2 over par score of 74.
Notre Dame is not participating in the tournament as they were unable to travel from South Bend to Tallahassee because of the weather affecting much of the United States.
The second round of the tournament begins Saturday morning at 8:30 off of the No. 1 and No. 10 tees. The Seminoles begin second round play at 9:10 a.m. and will play off of hole No. 1.
