Tallahassee, Fla. - The Florida State track and field team opened the 2005 season on Friday, March 4, 2005 with the Snowbird Invitational at the Mike Long Track and Field Complex in Tallahassee, Fla.
Sophomore Lindsey Nelson (Jacksonville, Fla./Mandarin) won the discus throw, recording a mark of 152'9" (46.56m). Rookie Erin Voss (Port Charlotte, Fla./Port Charlotte) was fourth in her first outdoor event as a Seminole, tossing for 134'11 (41.13m).
Junior Kate Purcell (West Point, Pa./Southern Illinois-Edwardsville) opened the season with a throw of 133'3" (40.61m) in the javelin, good for second place.
The women's 1600m sprint medley took first in 4:06.92.
Sophomore Charlene Walker (Orlando, Fla./Edgewater) was second in the long jump, posting a mark of 18'8" (5.69m). She was the top collegiate finisher in the event. Freshman Heather Leblanc (Live Oak, Fla./Suwannee) was fourth overall in the event with a mark of 17'2.75" (5.25m).
The women's team tested its depth in the 5000m run with five Seminoles finishing in the top ten. Freshmen Laura Bowerman (Temple Terrace, Fla./King) finished second in her first intercollegiate race in 17:19.01. Fellow rookie Kirsten Hagen (Blacksburg, Va./Christiansburg) took fourth in her college debut in 17:36.43. Sophomore Meredith Urban (Davie, Fla./Green Hope (N.C.)) was fifth in 17:41.93 while newcomer Amanda Hahn (Gainesville, Fla./Gainesville) was close behind in sixth in 17:48.68. Junior Suzanne Shepherd (Ellis, Kan./Ellis) rounded out the group in eighth place in 18:04.03.
The two-day meet wraps up tomorrow with the 4x100m relay at 4:20 p.m.
