Florida State Tennis Duo Captures ACC Indoor Doubles Championship

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Florida State men's tennis team competed in the ACC Indoor Championships throughout the weekend of January 17-19. The Seminoles saw much success in singles competition, but their greatest achievement came in doubles action, as Mat Cloer and Rodrigo Laub claimed the doubles championship.
Cloer, who advanced to the semifinals in singles competition, and Laub defeated Trent Brendon and David Loewenthal of Wake Forest, 8-3, to claim the 2003 ACC Indoor Doubles Championship. The duo found themselves in the championship match after defeating another Wake Forest pair in the semifinal round. In the semifinals, Cloer and Laub defeated Brett Ross and Derrick Spice by a score of 8-5. The quarterfinal match was an all-Florida State match-up as Cloer and Laub beat teammates Heiner Tadault and Chip Webb, 8-4. The pair had a bye in round one, but defeated West Nott and Scott Schnugg of Georgia Tech in a close second round match by a score of 9-7.
Mat Cloer was the most successful Seminole in singles play on the weekend, as he advanced to the semifinals of the ACC Indoors Singles Championship. In the first round of singles action, Cloer defeated Jon Davis of NC State by scores of 6-3, 6-1. With the win over Davis, he advanced to the second round to face Stephen Rozek of Virginia. Cloer defeated Rozek, 6-2, 6-2. The third round matched Cloer up with teammate Romain Jurd, who had advanced after defeating West Nott in the second round. Cloer beat Jurd 6-3, 6-1 to advance to the quarterfinals. In quarterfinal play, Cloer defeated Wake Forest's Mike Murray by scores of 6-3, 6-2. Cloer met his match in the semifinal round, as Ludovic Walter of Duke defeated him in a close match, 6-4, 7-5.
Florida State's Chip Webb had a successful showing on the weekend, as he advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to Doug Stewart of Virginia, 6-4, 6-1. To advance to the quarterfinals, Webb defeated some stiff competition. In the first round, he knocked off Stephen Amritraj of Duke, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Webb defeated Spice of Wake Forest in the second round by scores of 6-4, 7-6(11). In the third round of competition, Webb outlasted Jonathan Stokke of Duke, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
Alex Herrera and Jeff Groslimond were also successful in singles action. Herrera defeated Yorke Allen of Duke in the second round, 7-6 (4), 6-3, before falling to Scott Schnugg of Georgia Tech (6-3, 3-6, 3-6) in the third round. Jeff Groslimond was victorious in the first round of singles play, defeating Val Banada of NC State by scores of 6-2, 6-3, but fell to David Lowenthal of Wake Forest in the second round, 6-4, 6-1. The Seminoles will host the Seminole Team Tournament January 25th at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center on the campus of Florida State University. The Tribe will begin dual-match play the following weekend when it travels to Notre Dame and Michigan.
