No. 11 Florida State Men's Tennis Loses To No. 40 South Florida
Jan. 19, 2009
TAMPA, Fla. – The No. 11-ranked Florida State men’s tennis team was upset by No. 40 South Florida on Monday in Tampa, Fla. The Bulls defeated the Seminoles 5-2 to hand FSU its first loss of the season.
“We only won one out of four three-setters and that was the difference in the match,” FSU head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. “They have a very good team and they outplayed us today.
The day started off slowly for the Seminoles (2-1) losing the doubles point to USF. The team of senior Chris Cloer and junior Vahid Mirzadeh were the first to lose dropping a 8-3 match on court three to Mahmoud Hamed and Yannick Yoshizawa. The Garnet and Gold evened the match on court one when with 23rd-ranked junior Jean-Yves Aubone and sophomore Clint Bowles upsetting the 15th-ranked duo of Lucas Jovita and Thomas Estrada 8-5. The final match on court two went to a third-set tiebreak between 47th-ranked seniors Drew Bailey and Maciek Sykut and 58th-ranked Wael Kilani and Romain Deridder. Kilani and Deridder were able to win 9-8(4) to earn the doubles point for the Bulls.
“Losing the doubles was key,” Hulstquist said. “We were very close to pulling it out at No. 2 and I think we would have won the match if we won the doubles but we didn’t.”
Florida State and South Florida split the first two singles matches with No. 30 Aubone defeating No. 27 Jovita 7-5, 6-4 on court one and Bailey losing to Estrada 7-6, 7-5 on court six. The Seminoles would only win one more match on the day when No. 29 Bowles defeated Deridder on court three 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. The Bulls took home victories on court two where Hamed defeated Mirzadeh 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 and on court four where Kilani upset No. 79 Sykut 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. South Florida’s final point came on court five where Cloer lost in three sets to Jamaal Adderley7-6, 6-7, 10-7.
