Tallahassee, FL - California advanced to the second round of the NCAA women's soccer tournament with a 3-1 victory over Auburn. The Tigers end the season with an 11-6-3 record, while the Golden Bears improve to 12-4-5. Cal will now take on the second-seed Florida State Sunday at 1:00.

"We were expecting this to be a good game, it was every bit of the battle that I thought it would be," said Cal head coach Kevin Boyd.

Cal opened the book with an early goal in the fourth minute by senior Julia Schnugg . The goal was the finale of a three shot sequence that was sparked by a Katie Ratican corner kick. Nadia Al-Lami took a shot on goal, and was credited for an assist before Schnugg picked up her own rebound then knocked home her fifth goal of the season.

The Golden Bears widened their advantage to two goals as Schnugg found the net for the second time in the contest. Courtney Hooker played the ball wide to Stephanie Wieger who crossed the ball to Schnugg at the top of the six yard box. Schnugg put the ball in the net to improve her season goal tally to six, giving the senior her first multi-goal game as a Golden Bear.

Schnugg, who began her playing career at Florida State is making her second homecoming to Tallahassee after the Golden Bears lost to Florida State last season in the round of 16 by a 2-1 margin.

"I'm actually pretty surprised to be back, but I'm happy to be back," said Schnugg. "It's nice being back here in familiar turf, but this year we have a second chance, and we are really excited to get the chance again."

The third Cal goal came on a Caitlin Hannegan shot from twelve yards out. Schnugg earned her fifth point of the match as she played the ball in to Lisa Kevorkian, who tapped it to Hannegan in space for her first goal of the season.

In the 63rd minute, a handball in the penalty box gave Auburn a penalty kick. Jenny Zarzour (Huntsville, Ala.) took the spot shot, but she was stonewalled by third string goalkeeper Nichole Jarbo, making the first start of her career.

Auburn broke into the goal column in the 81st minute. Amanda Garcia took a free kick that caromed off the upright to the awaiting boot of Jenny Zarzour who put the ball in the back of the net. The goal was Zarzour's third goal of the season.

The Golden Bears will now take on host Florida State at the Seminole Soccer Complex on Sunday at 1:00 in the second round of the NCAA women's soccer tournament.
