Tallahassee, Fla. - Redshirt sophomore Garrett Johnson (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Baptist Academy) broke the Mike Long Track record in the shot put, winning the event with a mark of 66'0.5" (20.13m) in the final home meet of the season, the Seminole Twilight, on May 7, 2005.
His mark is the 13th best throw in the nation and places him at top three in the country. He moved ahead of teammate Dorian Scott (Springfield, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) for first place on FSU's all-time list. Scott was second in the event, throwing 63'4.25" (19.31m). Johnson also won the discus throw in 184'10" (56.35m). Scott bettered his regional qualifying distance in the event by over two feet, with his second-place mark of 172'7" (52.61m).
Sophomore Lindsey Nelson (Jacksonville, Fla./Mandarin) threw a career-best 163'3" (49.75m) in winning the discus event. Her prior best was a regional mark of 158'8" (48.36m). Freshman Elliott Wood (Sydney, Australia/Narrabean Sports) won the 400m hurdles in 52.50. Sophomore Jacob Peacock (Pensacola, Fla./Woodham) won the pole vault in 14'7.25" (4.45m).
Junior Barbara Parker (Norfolk, England/Loughborough) missed regionally qualifying in the 800m by .25 seconds, crossing the finish line in 2:10.05. Senior Sydney Mondragon (Pueblo, Colo./South) and sophomore India Pettus (Cleveland, Ohio/Trinity) were fourth and fifth in 2:15.05 and 2:15.50, respectively.
Junior Andrew Diakos (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) won the hammer throw with a mark of 193'10" (59.08m). Redshirt freshman Travis Dane (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) took second with a throw of 162'2" (49.43m).
Junior Kate Purcell (West Point, Pa./Southern Illinois-Edwardsville) won the javelin with a distance of 129'9" (39.55m). Junior Deanna Lane (Marietta, Ga./Pope) was second with a throw of 113'01" (34.49m). Lane took eighth in the long jump in 17'3.5" (5.27m) and third in the 100m hurdles in 14.01.
Junior LaToya Legree (Lithonia, Ga./Stephenson) finished in 24.92 in the 200m dash, just ahead of freshman Naikeya Heath (Killeen, Tex./Killeen) who was tenth in 24.99 and rookie Kandia Batchelor (Tampa, Fla./Hollsborough) ran 25.30, good for 11th place. Batchelor also ran in the 200m, posting a 57.24 clip.
Sophomore Chris Nickinson (Pensacola, Fla./Washington) was the runner-up in the 1500m run in 3:54.10 while sophomore Eric Critzer (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) was seventh in 3:56.18. Redshirt sophomore Kenny Jesensky (Orlando, Fla./Dr. Phillips) completed the event in 4:08.69.
Junior Ricky Argro (Orlando, Fla./Lyman), senior Rhoan Sterling (Ontario, Canada/Toledo), freshman Walter Dix (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs) and sophomore Cedric Nabe (Geneva, Switzerland/Lycee St. Joseph) ran a 39.97 in the 4x100m relay, good for second place. Sterling finished eighth in the 100m in 10.67 while Argro was tenth in 10.75. Nabe was 12th in 10.80 while junior Johnta Griffin (Orlando, Fla./Florida A&M) was 13th in 10.81. Griffin was second in the triple jump with a distance of 46'1.25" (14.05m).
Argro was the top long jumper for FSU, taking third in 23'0.75" (7.03m). Senior Courtney Wright (Bartonsville, Ill./limestone Community) took eighth with 21'4.25" (6.51m). Junior Duane Griffiths (Margate, Fla./Taravello) was fourth in 1:54.33 in the 800m run.
Senior Sharneka Brown (St. Petersburg, Fla./Florida A&M) was second in the triple jump in 39'1" (11.91m) just ahead of teammate Stacie Wilds, who was fourth in 36'10.5" (11.24m).
The Seminoles return to action on Saturday, May 14 at the Georgia Tech Invitational.
