Florida State Falls In Heartbreaker At Duke, 4-3

DURHAM, N.C. - The Florida State men's tennis team traveled to Durham, N.C. Sunday, April 6th, to take on the Duke Blue Devils. The Blue Devils and the Seminoles entered the match neck and neck for the top spot in the conference. Duke had a one match lead on the Tribe entering the competition, but with a 4-3 win, the Blue Devils clinched the top spot and secured the No. 1 seed in the ACC Tournament. With the loss the Seminoles fall to 12-9 overall and 5-2 in the conference, while Duke improves to 15-5, 7-0 in the ACC.

The Seminoles and the Blue Devils battled in doubles competition, but Duke defeated the Tribe in two of three matches to clinch the first match of the day. Florida State freshmen Jeff Groslimond and Chris Westerhof continued their success in doubles action, as they defeated Peter Shults and Jonathan Stokke by a score of 9-8. In No. 1 doubles, Alex Herrera and Romain Jurd, currenlty ranked 44th in the country, fell to 8th-ranked Phillip King and Michael Yani of Duke, 8-6. Mat Cloer and Rodrigo Laub, playing at the No. 2 position, were impressive, but could not hold off Duke's Ludovic Walter and Jason Zimmerman, as the Blue Devils won, 9-8.

Florida State saw many hard fought battles in singles play, but could not do enough to hold off Duke's attack. The Tribe split the six singles matches with the Blue Devils, giving Duke a 4-3 victory. Florida State's Cloer, ranked 70th in the nation, tied the match score, as he overpowered 24th-ranked King by scores of 6-3, 6-2. Duke quickly regained the lead, as 104th-ranked Jurd was defeated by Duke's Yani, currently ranked 30th by the ITA, in No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-2. The Blue Devils extended their lead to 3-1, as Westerhoff fell at the No. 4 position to 96th-ranked Walter of Duke by scores of 6-1, 0-6, 6-1. Senior Laub defeated Shults of Duke in No. 6 singles, 6-4, 7-6, in No. 6 singles. At the No. 3 position, Webb of Florida State fell at the hands of Zimmerman by scores of 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. After Duke had clinched the match, Groslimond of Florida State added to the Seminoles lead as he knocked off Stokke, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4.

The Seminoles will return to action Saturday, April 12th, as they host the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. This will be the final regular-season match for the Tribe and it will begin at 1:00 pm.
