TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 11 Florida State men’s tennis team could not overcome a three hour rain delay or a powerful Texas team in front of a raucous crowd at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center losing 4-2 to the second-ranked team in the country.
“Texas is a great team and it was a great college match that was evenly played,” FSU head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. “The match came down to a few points and I was proud with how we competed and the atmosphere of the crowd.”
The Seminoles (2-2) started the day strong winning four out of six first sets in singles before the rain came. After the three hour delay, the Longhorns regained the momentum earning the first two points of the day. On court three, Kellen Damico of Texas defeated junior Vahid Mirzadeh in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 and on court five senior Chris Cloer lost 6-4, 6-3 to Miguel Reyes Varela.
“I’m glad we were able to finish the match after the rain even though we lost,” Hultquist said. “We had the momentum going and when we came back after the delay Texas kind of took it to us a little bit. If you look back at the match the difference they were able to close out matches in the second set, we went 0-6 in the second set today.”
The Garnet and Gold pulled within 2-1 on court two when 29th-ranked sophomore Clint Bowles beat the Longhorns Ed Corrie in three-sets 6-2, 3-6, 6-4. Texas made the score 3-1 on court one where No. 31 Dimitar Kutrovsky upset No. 30 junior Jean-Yves Aubone in three sets. After Aubone won the first set 6-3, Kutrovsky took the next two sets 6-4, 6-3. The Seminoles earned their second point in a dramatic match on court four. No. 79 senior Maciek Sykut used three service breaks in the final set to defeat No. 84 Olivier Sajous 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. However the Longhorns were able to close out the match minutes later on court six when Texas’ Josh Zavala beat senior Drew Bailey 5-7, 7-5, 6-3.
Next up for the Seminoles is a trip to South Bend, Ind., to face Notre Dame.
