Florida State Men's Tennis Defeats South Florida, 5-2

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida State men's tennis team, ranked 45th in the latest rankings released by the ITA, hosted the 36th-ranked University of South Florida Friday, March 21st, at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center on the Florida State University campus. The Bulls had won seven-straight matches against the Seminoles, but the Tribe would not allow them to extend their streak to eight, as Florida State defeated South Florida by a score of 5-2. With the victory, the Seminoles improve to 9-8 on the season, while the Bulls fall to 11-4.
Florida State got off to a strong start against the Bulls, as the squad was victorious in two of three doubles matches. Florida State freshmen Jeff Groslimond and Chris Westerhof, currently ranked 56th in the country, got the Seminoles off on the right foot, as they defeated Andy Maroldt and Sebastian Neidermeyer at the No. 2 position, 8-2. Mat Cloer and Rodrigo Laub, playing in No. 1 doubles, clinched the doubles point, as they knocked off 27th-ranked Paco Antelo and Renato Silveira of South Florida by a score of 8-6. In No. 3 doubles, Alex Herrera and Hagen Endler were defeated by Uli Kiendl and Juan Barragan of South Florida, 9-8 (5).
After earning the first point of the day in doubles action, it looked as if Florida State would allow South Florida back into the match. In No. 6 singles, senior Laub fell to South Florida's Jorge Escallon by scores of 6-3, 6-2, which tied the match score at one. The Bulls took a 2-1 lead, when Florida State's Chip Webb, playing at the No. 3 position, was defeated by 101st-ranked Antelo, 6-1, 6-4.
After allowing South Florida to take two matches, the Seminoles were victorious in the remaining four. At the No. 1 position, sophomore Cloer, ranked 120th by the ITA, fell in the first set to Kiendl of South Florida, but dominated the second and third sets to win by scores of 2-6, 6-1, 6-1. Groslimond gave the Tribe a 3-2 lead, as he defeated South Florida's Federico Bartow, 6-3, 6-4, in No. 5 singles. Florida State's Westerhof clinched the Seminole victory, as he knocked off Maroldt at the No. 4 position by scores of 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. Junior Herrera, playing at the No. 2 position, defeated South Florida's Silveira, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
The Seminoles will return to action Saturday, March 22nd, when they host ACC foe Maryland. The match is scheduled to be played at 1:00 pm at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.
