TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The second half of the 2009 soccer season gets underway in Cary, N.C. on Wednesday, November 4 as the 22nd ACC Women's Soccer Championship begins with third-ranked Florida State squaring off against Duke at 12 noon.
Florida State enters the tournament as the No. 1 seed for the first time in school history, while Duke earned the eighth-seed. The Seminoles become just the second school outside the state of North Carolina to claim the top seed in the conference tournament as FSU joins Clemson, who finished first in the league standings with a 5-1-1 record in 2000.
FSU is 7-12-5 all-time in ACC Tournament play and has posted a mark of 5-7-5 in nine all-time tournament appearances in the state of North Carolina. In three of those nine appearances, the Seminoles have played for the conference championship including twice at WakeMed Park in Cary.
The Garnet and Gold has advanced out of the first round of the ACC Tournament in three of the last four years and is 5-6-3 all-time in the first round of the ACC Tournament. A season ago, Florida State and Virginia Tech played to a scoreless draw in the first round, but the Hokies edged the Seminoles 4-2 in penalty kicks to advance to the semifinals.
The Seminoles and Blue Devils will meet for only the second time in the ACC Tournament. FSU defeated Duke 2-0 in the first round of the tournament in Cary back in 2006.
Earlier this year, FSU and Duke played to a scoreless draw in Durham as the Seminoles held the advantage in both shots (18-9) and corners (11-6). Freshman keeper Tara Campbell made eight saves in goal for the Blue Devils, while Toni Pressley and Amanda DaCosta led the Seminoles with three shots a piece.
