ACC Co-Champs Earn No. 1 Seed
Nov. 2, 2009
CARY, N.C. - The Atlantic Coast Conference announced on Monday, November 2 the pairings for the 22nd ACC Women's Soccer Championship at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. Florida State earned the No. 1 seed in this year's tournament and will face eighth-seeded Duke in the first round on Wednesday, November 4 at 12:00 p.m.
The nationally third-ranked Seminoles (14-3-1 overall) finished tied with sixth-ranked Boston College (15-2-1) for the top spot in the final ACC standings. Both teams posted 7-2-1 marks in ACC play, but Florida State received the nod as the number one seed by virtue of its 3-2 win over the Eagles during the regular season.
Following Sunday's 2-1 victory over Virginia Tech, Florida State put its stamp on the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament for the first time in school history. With Florida State and Boston College sharing the regular season title, it marks just the second time a school outside the state of North Carolina claimed the ACC regular season championship. FSU and BC join Clemson, who finished first in the league standings with a 5-1-1 record in 2000.
Since 2001, the Seminoles have finished no lower than fourth place in the ACC standings, while it is the seventh straight top three finish for the Garnet and Gold and eighth overall.
A season ago, Florida State and Virginia Tech played to a 0-0 tie in the first round of the conference tournament in Cary. The Hokies advanced to the semifinals defeating the Seminoles 4-2 in penalty kicks.
Friday's semifinal action will air live and free of charge over the internet on ACC All-Access. Sunday's championship game will be televised live on Fox Sports South at 2:00 pm.
