TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - With the Florida State soccer season just a little more than a month from its season opener on August 20, many of the current Seminoles are spending their summer vacation fine tuning their skills in leagues across the country. Throughout the summer, Seminoles.com will provide fans an inside look at how the current Seminoles are performing both on and off the field.
The U.S. U-20 women's team, comprised of Seminole juniors Tiffany McCarty, Toni Pressley and Casey Short, began their play today in the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup with a 1-1 tie against Ghana. The U.S team is in Group D along with Ghana, Switzerland and the Korea Republic. The next game will be against Switzerland on July 17. The game will be played at the Rudolf-Harbig Stadium in Dresden, a newly built 27,000-seat venue. The U.S. team will then travel to the recently renovated FIFA Women's World Cup Stadium in Bielefeld, a 28,000-seat venue, to conclude group play against the Koreans.
Junior Tori Huster and the U.S. U-23 women's team are currently playing in the Four Nations Tournament in England. The United States defeated host country England 3-0 on July 7, but then lost two days later to Norway 1-2. The Red, White and Blue most recently played Sweden on July 12, which concluded in a 1-1 tie.
Sophomore Ines Jaurena, who is playing for her native country of France, played her first game of the U-20 Women's World Cup on July 13 against Columbia which finished in a 1-1 tie. France is playing in Group A along with Columbia, Germany and Costa Rica. Jaurena and France next game is against Costa Rica July 16.
In W-League action, 11 Seminole student-athletes have hit the field this summer racking up valuable minutes on the pitch. Katya Gokhman and Tifani Mullen have both scored a goal for the Atlanta Silverbacks, while Huster, Tiana Brockway and Ella Stephen have each tallied an assist.
