Freshman Earns ACC Accolades For Track Performances
Jan. 24, 2005
Tallahassee, Fla. - Florida State freshman Walter Dix (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs) was named Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Performer of the Week for his performance at the Niswonger Invitational in Johnson City, Tenn., from January 21-22, 2005.
"It's pretty amazing when a freshman, in his second weekend of collegiate competition, earns that honor," said second-year head coach Bob Braman. "I think it says a lot about our sprint program and where we're going as a team."
Dix compiled two event wins in the 60m and 200m dash this weekend en route to a pair of NCAA provisional qualifying times at the meet. He recorded a time of 6.76 in the prelims of the 60m dash and bested that mark with a personal and ACC best time of 6.66 in the finals to win the event. In only his second collegiate meet, he then broke the Seminole school record in the 200m dash taking first in 20.87 in the preliminary round. He also took first in the 200m finals with a mark of 20.88. In addition to running the 60m and 200m events, he long jumped 23'11.75" for fifth place at the meet and second overall in the conference best list.
