Florida State Men's Tennis Advances To Second Round Of ACC Tournament

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Florida State men's tennis team advanced to the second round of the ACC Tournament Friday, April 18th, as they defeated Georgia Tech by a score of 4-3 at the Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center in Raleigh, N.C. The first-round match marked the second time that the Seminoles and the Yellow Jackets have met in the past six days. In the last meeting between the two schools, the Tribe defeated the Ramblin' Wreck in Tallahassee, Fla., 4-3. With the win, Florida State improves to 14-9, while Georgia Tech falls to 12-9.

The Seminoles earned the first point of the day in doubles action. In No. 1 doubles, Alex Herrera and Romain Jurd, currently ranked 51st in the nation, defeated 20th-ranked Roger Anderson and Scott Schnugg of Georgia Tech, 8-6. The Seminoles claimed their second point of the doubles portion of the match, as 49th-ranked Mat Cloer and Rodrigo Laub powered past Georgia Tech's Joao Menano and Marko Rajevac by a score of 8-5. Florida State's Jeff Groslimond and Chris Westerhof, playing at the No. 3 position, fell to West Nott and Trevor McLeod, 8-1.

Florida State continued their success in the singles portion of the match, as the squad won three of six matches to clinch a 4-3 victory against their conference rival. At the No. 1 position, ACC Player of the Year Cloer, currently ranked 45th in the country, defeated 23rd-ranked Anderson of Georgia Tech, 1-6, 6-4, 6-1. Florida State junior Jurd, playing in No. 2 singles, fell to 102nd-ranked Schnugg by scores of 6-3, 2-6, 6-1. Freshman Westerhof was defeated by Georgia Tech's Menano at the No. 3 position, 2-6, 7-5, 7-6(4). In No. 3 singles, Florida State's Chip Webb outlasted Nott by scores of 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. Groslimond, playing at the No. 5 position, overpowered McLeod of Georgia Tech, 6-3, 6-3. Florida State senior Laub fell to Rajevac in No. 6 singles by scores of 6-3, 6-2.

Florida State advances to the second round of the tournament and is scheduled to face the second-seeded Clemson Tigers Saturday, April 19th, at 1:00 pm.
