TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State men’s tennis team will face its first test of the fall season as six players will compete in the Olympia Fields Invitational in Olympia Fields, Ill., beginning on Friday, September 19.
“This will be good because we are trying to build up to the All-American Championships in a couple of weeks,” FSU head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. “Hopefully this tournament will help prepare our guys for that as well as our regionals.”
Seniors Maciek Sykut and Chris Cloer, junior Michael O’Shea, sophomore Clint Bowles and freshman Chris Reiman will compete for the Seminoles at the clay court tournament against players from 2008 NCAA runner-up Texas and 2007 runner-up Illinois.
“I am thrilled with how strong the competition is going to be with Illinois and Texas,” Hultquist said. “They are two of the better teams in the country with both teams being in the finals the last two seasons.”
Two Seminoles enter the tournament ranked nationally by the ITA. Bowles will begin the fall season ranked No. 47 and Sykut is ranked No. 119. Texas has four players in the top 50 lead by No. 7 Dimitar Kutrovsky. The Longhorns Kellen Damico is ranked No. 27, Ed Corrie is No. 30 and Florida Atlantic transfer Olivier Sajous is No. 47. Illinois will bring three ranked players to the tournament led by 70th-ranked Billy Heiser.
“There won’t be any easy matches because all of the players there are going to be good,” Hultquist said. “Any wins we get are going to be nationally ranked wins so we hope to get some of those coming out of this tournament.”
Matches begin on Friday with doubles at 10:00 a.m. and singles competition starts at 2:30 p.m. The tournament will conclude on Sunday, September 21, and results from each day of competition will be posted on www.seminoles.com.
