May 8, 2009
TALLAHASSEE, Fla.- The 16th-ranked Florida State men's tennis team advanced to the second-round of the 2009 NCAA Men's Tennis Tournament by defeating Jacksonville State 4-0 at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.
"I thought we did what we needed to do and were professional and stayed after it," FSU head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. "We hit our shots, stayed aggressive and didn't get too high or too low. We were good today."
The Seminoles jumped out quickly in doubles winning in less than 45 minutes taking a 1-0 lead. FSU got its first doubles victory on court one where 20th-ranked juniors Jean-Yves Aubone and Vahid Mirzadeh defeated Bernardo Bachino and Gustavo Holz 8-3. The Garnet and Gold clinched the point on court two when No. 74-ranked seniors Drew Bailey and Maciek Sykut upended Eduardo Saratt and Scott Robertson 8-3. With the victory Sykut became the winningest player in Florida State history surpassing Jason White . The All-ACC performer now has 173 combined singles and doubles victories.
"One and two doubles got on top really quick and that was the key to setting the tone," Hultquist said. "Those courts really set the tone for the entire day."
Florida State got its first singles victory on court five where senior Chris Cloer defeated the Gamecocks Steffen Solomon 6-1, 6-1. Sykut gave FSU a 3-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Saratt. The Marathon, Fla., native ended the match with a between the legs passing shot and now is tied with White for all-time singles wins as a Seminole (92).
"This milestone snuck up on me at the end of the season," Sykut said. "I didn't know if there would be enough time for me to get there or not, but I've just kept playing my matches like I have all year and it happened."
The Seminoles clinched the match on court four where Bailey was victorious against Chris Duke. The Tallahassee, Fla., native won the first set 6-1 and at 4-3 in the second, broke Duke and went on to clinch the match. This marks the second time in three matches that the three seniors won the three singles matches for the Garnet and Gold.
"The three seniors got the wins and got off the court," Hultquist said. "I think they understand the importance of finishing off matches."
"It's pretty exciting to see the upperclassmen step up," Sykut said. "We've gotten together to step up, we're having fun and it's nice."
