Florida State Falls to 0-2 With Loss To Alabama

NORMAL, Ill. - Florida State faced the University of Alabama in the Seminoles' second match of the Barker GMC Classic Saturday, August 31st, at Redbird Arena. Florida State battled the Crimson Tide, but was unable to pull out the win, as Alabama defeated the Tribe by a score of 3-1(30-26, 27-30, 30-19, 30-28).
The Seminoles recorded 17 hitting errors, 17 service errors and a hitting percentage of .243 in the loss to the Tide. Kristin Frye hit .455 on the day to lead Florida State in hitting percentage. Frye and Sevillano each scored 13 points for a team high. Erica Bunch, Dawn Hough and Alex Sevillano each recorded one solo block. Freshman libero Jennifer Orlowski led the team in digs with nine.
"Today's performance was an improvement from last night against Illinois State," said head coach Todd Kress. "We just need to pick up aggressive attitude when we are out on the court. If we do that we will win."
The Seminoles took an early lead in game one, but could not hold on as Alabama came from behind to win 30-26. Senior outside hitter Alex Sevillano hit .800 to led the way for Florida State as she scored five points and recorded four kills on five attacks with no errors. She was also responsible for one solo block. Kristin Frye had four points for the Seminoles and recorded a hitting percentage of .600 with four kills on five attacks and one error.
The Seminoles came together in game two, defeating the Tide by a score of 30-27. Aisha Carr powered the Florida State attack as she scored four points and recorded three kills on three attacks with no errors. Sevillano scored three points for the Seminoles in the second game. Freshman Kristen Rust led the squad in hitting percentage as she hit .500.
In game three, Florida State fell to Alabama by a score of 30-19. The Seminoles tallied seven kills on 21 attacks and one error, recording a hitting percentage of .286. Service errors plagued the Seminole offense as five balls were hit into the net. Rust and Frye led the team in scoring as they each put three points on the board.
Down two games to one entering the fourth game of the match, the Seminoles were out to prove something. Florida State got off to a slow start as the Crimson Tide scored the first four points of the game, but the Seminoles rallied to tie the score at nine. The squad took the lead late in the game by a score of 28-27, but could not hold on as Alabama defeated Florida State by a score of 30-28 to win the match.
The Seminoles will return to action at 5:00 p.m. CST, when Florida State faces Marshal in the final round of the Barker GMC Classis at Illinois State University. The Seminoles will return home on September 4th, when they host Jacksonville University at Tully Gymnasium. The match with the Dolphins is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
