Tallahassee, Fla. - CoSIDA, in conjunction with ESPN the Magazine, announced the Academic District III winners of the University Division on Friday, November 2. Florida State garnered three representatives on this year's District III team as Becky Edwards, Katrin Schmidt and Kirsten van de Ven all received honors. Edwards earned first-team recognition while Schmidt and van de Ven each received second team honors. After being named to the All-District first team, Edwards will now be in the running for national Academic All-America honors.
All three student-athletes have played an integral role in the success of the Seminoles in 2007 leading the team to a regular season record of 11-4-3 and a 6-2-2 mark in ACC play.
Edwards started and played in all 18 games this season and has made 24 consecutive starts and 43 total in her first two seasons. The sophomore defender leads the team in minutes played (1624) and is currently riding the longest consecutive minutes played streak on the team at 1279:58. A native of Downingtown, Pa., Edwards set career-highs for points, goals and shots against Troy tallying four points on two goals with three shots. A two-time member of the Dean List's at Florida State, Edwards was named to the All-ACC Academic Team in 2006, while being named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll in 2006-2007.
Schmidt has also started and played in all 18 games this season. Since arriving at Florida State in 2005, she has started in all but one game and has currently played in 52 consecutive games for the Garnet and Gold. The Schleiden, Germany native ranks third on the team in assists with six in 2007. She established a career-high in assists with two in FSU's victory over Francis Marion back on September 7. Schmidt is a four-time member of the Dean's List at Florida State and was a two-time honoree on the All-ACC Academic Team in 2005 and 2006. Schmidt has also been named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll in each of her first two seasons.
Schmidt and Edwards have guided a defensive effort that has posted eight shutouts and a 0.90 GAA this season.
Van de Ven ranks second on the team in shots (37), tied for third in goals scored (5) and tied for fourth in points (13) and assists with three. With 17 starts this season and 53 in her Seminole career, van de Ven tied her career-high for points in a game as she posted three, on a goal and an assist, in FSU's 4-1 victory over NC State. At one point this season, the Holland native had a stretch of four straight games with a point as she was responsible for three straight FSU goals in three consecutive games - scoring the final goal of the UCF game, the only goal against North Carolina and the first goal vs. NC State. The senior midfielder was named to the President's List after posting a 4.0 GPA in the spring and fall semesters of 2006. Van de Ven is a two-time ACC Academic Honor Roll honoree and was named to the 2006 All-ACC Academic Team.
