Seminole Duo Pull Off Upset At USTA Tallahassee Tennis Challenger
April 20, 2009
TALLAHASSEE, Fla.- Senior Maciek Sykut and junior Vahid Mirzadeh shocked the fans at Forest Meadows at the USTA Tallahassee Tennis Challenger by upending the No. 2-seeded team in the tournament in a come from behind win on Monday evening.
"I don't even know what to say because Vahid and I have never played together," Sykut said. "I'm just so excited that the tournament director gave me a wild card and I loved playing in the atmosphere and I had a lot of fun."
"It's amazing and just ridiculous to be in a match like that," Mirzadeh said. "The atmosphere was awesome and the way we came back at the end shows how hard we fought."
The Seminole duo defeated Carsten Ball and David Martin 6-2, 0-6, 10-7 on Stadium Court in front of an energetic crowd. Sykut and Mirzadeh started strong by going up an early break and cruising to a first set win. Things turned quickly in the second set with Ball and Martin dominating play en route to a 6-0 triumph to even the match. In the deciding tiebreaker it looked like the team from Florida State would fold going down quickly 5-0. However, Sykut and Mirzadeh rallied winning the last eight points of the tiebreaker to finish the upset 10-7.
"We lost 6-0 and went down 5-0 but we felt the margin was small," Sykut said. "We told each other not to chance anything and to have fun and we won a couple of points and we won."
"I think that Maciek and I thought that it was over," Mirzadeh said. "I said that's just fight and stay in it and we got some points and they missed some shots and we won."
The duo will play in the second round of doubles on Wednesday against Rylen Deheart and Alex Kuznetsov. ACC Player of the Year Jean-Yves Aubone will compete in singles beginning on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m., against Joao Souza. For updates log onto www.seminoles.com.
