Florida State Picked To Finish Second In the ACC
Aug. 12, 2009
GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Atlantic Coast Conference and Commissioner John D. Swofford announced on Wednesday, August 12 the preseason poll for the 2009 women's soccer season, as determined by a vote of the league's 11 head coaches. For the fourth consecutive year, Florida State was the coaches' pick to finish second as the Seminoles garnered 109 points.
"Once again it's flattering that the other coaches in the ACC think so highly of our program," said head coach Mark Krikorian. "This is truly a tribute to the hard work and dedication our student-athletes have put into making this program a successful one year after year."
North Carolina was the unanimous favorite to finish atop the league standings in 2009. The defending national champions were picked first by each of the ACC's 11 head coaches as the Tar Heels bid for their fifth straight conference championship and 21st overall.
The Seminoles have been picked to finish in the top four of the ACC in seven of the last eight seasons. This marks the fifth time in the program's 15-year history that FSU has been slated to finish in second place. Since the arrival of head coach Mark Krikorian, Florida State has registered at least 17 wins in each of the last four seasons while finishing no lower than second place in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
"While we certainly acknowledge the preseason poll and feel good that the coaches would look at the Florida State program and have such respect for it, we know that there is a lot that can happen between now and December," added Krikorian. "As I have said in the past, it's the polls at the end of the season that matter the most. We are just excited to get started and will take the season one game at a time."
Florida State returns six of 11 starters and 14 letterwinners from last year's squad that reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament for the fourth consecutive year.
Completing the preseason poll in order of projected finish are Boston College (96), Virginia (88), Duke (76), Wake Forest (66), Virginia Tech (51), Maryland (42), Miami (41), Clemson (19), and NC State (17).
