Tallahassee, Fla. - In Part II of Senior Takes, Seminoles.com recently sat down with Melissa Samokishyn and Kirsten van de Ven and took a closer look at the time they have spent at Florida State over the last couple years. Here is what they had to say...

By Melissa Wheeler, FSU Sports Information

Melissa Samokishyn
Senior ~ Defender
Littleton, Colorado

How has your life changed in the four years that you have been at Florida State?
I have more responsibilities. Also, I have to plan for the future and my career, and really get serious about it. Also, I have a dog named Layla (American bulldog mix), and she is like my daughter so I have to take care of her.

How have you seen yourself grow since arriving on campus your freshman year?
Well, I had to go up in a jean size...just kidding! But really, I have really matured and I have learned how to deal with things when life doesn't go your way. I have become more confident in myself and who I am as a person.

How has it felt to play for a nationally ranked program?
Playing for a nationally ranked program feels as though I have completed one of the goals I set for myself when I played youth club soccer. I have always wanted to play for a ranked team.

How does it feel to know that you have helped keep the program at its elite status and as one of the top programs in the nation?
I am proud that I have helped to keep the team as a top program in the nation. We have helped start something that is only going to get better, and the rankings will only get higher. We helped establish a team that is going to continue to grow and only get better.

What has been your greatest moment at Florida State and what kind of lasting impression will it leave on you?
The greatest moment at FSU was when I scored the winning PK against UNC to go to the final four. I ended up getting to play the full 90 minutes against UNC's best player, and we ended up going into PKs. I wasn't told until the very last minute that I was taking one, and I happened to be the fifth shooter. Walking up to the PK spot I was confident but anxious. I just told myself I was going to score, and that was it. I just shot the ball and it went in the net. We won and it was just amazing!

Senior Kirsten van de Ven

How has your life changed in the three years that you have been at Florida State?
It has changed in a lot of ways. I have another view of the world and of life, not just the Dutch view anymore. After being here you see that there are so many other ways to do things, and one doesn't have to necessarily be right or wrong, just a different way of doing stuff. Also being on a team with the other foreigners gives me another perspective on life. Finally, in Holland community service isn't a big way of life, but I've learned the importance of here it here in the States, so now I will try to do it more often.

How have you seen yourself grow since arriving on campus your sophomore year?
I didn't know the customs, so I just followed people because I didn't know how to do it myself, but now I know how to do things a lot better. Now I can help people and make them feel more comfortable. I've grown in so many ways, the language, and being far away from home. I have grown to be more independent, taking care of myself...just by doing my own laundry and cooking my own food.

How has it felt to play for a nationally ranked program?
I love it because I love to play with such talented players around you. We have great facilities and I have been able to learn so much from my teammates and the coaching staff.

How does it feel to know that you have helped keep the program at its elite status and as one of the top programs in the nation?
I am proud. I am glad that they gave me a chance to do it, and the opportunity. In my own country I would have never had the opportunity.

What has been your greatest moment at Florida State and what kind of lasting impression will it leave on you?
Although I was injured with my ACL, qualifying for the College Cup for first time. I remember before I came here I played for a smaller school in Connecticut. When I came here I knew I really wanted to make it to the College Cup, and it was amazing to beat UNC. Tying UNC in regulation time was already an accomplishment because they are UNC, and when Minna (Pyykko) stopped UNC's PK it was like `wow, if we keep scoring we are in'. After Mel (Samokishyn) took her final PK shot everybody was running to her, but I was on crutches so I just crutched over...it was awesome!"
