McCarty, who was named the ACC Offensive Player of the Year in 2009, is having an outstanding sophomore campaign finishing the regular season leading the league in points and goals. She enters the NCAA Tournament with 38 points on 16 goals and six assists and is just one of four players in the ACC to rank in the top 10 in points, goals and assists.
Even more impressive were her numbers against league opponents in 2009 as McCarty recorded 20 points on eight goals and four assists in 10 games. Thanks to a two-goal performance against Virginia Tech in the regular season finale, the Laurel, Md., native became the single-season record holder for points in ACC play at FSU surpassing Sanna Talonen who achieved the record with 19 points a season ago. McCarty is already the all-time career holder at Florida State with 31 points in ACC games, while she is tied for the school record with 12 goals and second in assists with seven.
The ACC Offensive Player of the Year award is the second for the Seminoles in the last three years as McCarty joins Mami Yamaguchi, who was honored by the league in 2007. McCarty, who was named ACC Freshman of the Year a season ago, joins exclusive company becoming just the sixth player in conference history to earn both Freshman of the Year and Player of the Year accolades. She is just the second player in the ACC to win Player of the Year honors a year after being named Freshman of the Year (Lindsay Tarpley, North Carolina, 2002-03).
Edwards was named to the All-ACC first team in 2009. The Downingtown, Pa., native has started every game for FSU in 2009 and is in the midst of a career season in her final year with the Seminoles. The senior holding midfielder ranks third on the team in points with 16 tallying five goals and six assists.
Earlier this year, Edwards earned first team CoSIDA Academic District III honors for her work in the classroom. Majoring in marketing, Edwards is a five-time member of the Dean's List at Florida State, while earning President's List honors following the fall 2008 semester for posting a 4.0 GPA. She is a three-time member of both the All-ACC Academic Team and ACC Academic Honor Roll.
Florida State will open the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday, November 13 against Southeastern Louisiana at 4:30 p.m., inside the Seminoles Soccer Complex.
