Florida State Volleyball Loses Heartbreaker To Third-Ranked Gators

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The Seminoles had their hands full Tuesday, September 24th, as they faced the third-ranked Florida Gators. In a hard-fought battle with in-state rival Florida, the Tribe fell 3-1 (30-25, 24-30, 18-30, 26-30). Florida State was led by seniors Erica Bunch, Kristin Frye and Dawn Hough. With the loss the Seminoles fall to 8-4 on the season, while the Gators improve to 10-1.
Senior Frye had a double-double against the Gators as she recorded 16 kills and 12 digs for Florida State. Frye had a hitting percentage of .175 on the night. Erica Bunch also tallied 16 kills for the Seminoles. Dawn Hough performed well for the tribe as she notched 10 kills. Alex Sevillano led the FSU in hitting percentage with .250. Junior setter Jennifer Anderson inched closer to third place among all-time assists leaders at Florida State as she had 52 assists on the night.
The Gators were led by Jacque Robinson , as she recorded 21 kills, seven digs and hit .459 against Florida State. Standout Aury Cruz performed up to her reputation, recording a double-double with 14 kills and 11 digs. Rachel Engel led Florida in assists with 50.
Florida State got off to a quick start in game one against the third-ranked Gators. The Seminoles led early and were only down by one at the midway point, 14-15. The Tribe built momentum after the break and regained the lead at 21-20. As momentum grew for Florida State, the Seminoles took a late 26-23 lead. Behind the powerful punch of Erica Bunch, the Tribe was victorious in game one, 30-25.
With a win in game one, the Seminoles needed two wins to put away the third-ranked Gators. Florida would not go quietly into this September night, however, as the Gators jumped out to an early 6-2 lead. The Seminoles fought back and cut the lead to one, but could not take the lead. At the half, Florida led the Tribe, 15-10. The Gators took their biggest lead of the match at 22-14, before defeating Florida State 30-24 in game two.
Florida State and Florida were tied at one game each entering game three. The Seminoles got off to a sluggish start in the third game and the Gators took full advantage as Florida took a 12-6 lead. Florida looked to have a repeat performance of game two as they took a 15-10 lead into the television timeout. The Gators took their biggest lead of the night at 29-17 late in the game. Third-ranked Florida proved to be too much as the Gators took game three, 30-18.
The Florida squad carried their momentum into game four, as they defeated the Seminoles by a score of 30-26. After tying the game numerous times during the game, Florida State took their first lead, 13-12 and took a 15-13 lead into the break. The Gators quickly rebounded and regained the lead at 17-16. Although the Seminoles put forth the effort to come back, Florida took control and was victorious in game four.
The Tribe will return to action this weekend, when they host Wake Forest and Duke in the friendly confines of Tully Gymnasium. The match up with the Demon Deacons is scheduled for Friday, September 27th, at 7:00 p.m., while the Duke match is to be held on Saturday, September 28th, at 7:00 p.m. Sunshine Network will televise the face-off with the Blue Devils.
