Melbourne, Fla. - The Florida State women's soccer team ended the spring season on a high note as the Seminoles defeated the UCF Knights 2-0 in front of a crowd of over 1,500 at Viera Regional Park in Melbourne, Fla., on Saturday, April 12. Amanda DaCosta and Annie Stalzer each scored a goal in the win as the Garnet and Gold finished the spring with a 3-1-1 record which included four shutouts.
The match was part of a charity event organized by the Brevard County Parks and Recreation Department and the Space Coast United youth soccer club as both schools were playing to raise money and awareness for the Ovarian Cancer Alliance of Florida/Space Coast. Admission to the game was free while donations were accepted at the gate.
In a game that featured two 45 minute halves, Florida State took a 1-0 lead after the first period on a goal by DaCosta, the reigning National Freshman of the Year. Stalzer added an insurance goal last in the second half to give the Seminoles the two-goal victory.
"Overall, I felt the spring season was beneficial to the development of our program," said head coach Mark Krikorian. "The great part about the spring is that everyone gets a chance to play and play a lot of minutes. We were able to address a lot of areas that we needed extra development in and hopefully those lessons learned will carry over into the '08 season."
Florida State will open the 2008 season at home against UCF on Friday, August 22 at 7:00 p.m.
