Tallahassee, Fla. - The Florida State men's tennis team concluded its fall season over the weekend with a strong showing at the Omni Hotels/ITA Region II Championships in Chapel Hill, N.C. Leading the way was junior Alex Herrera who won 11 matches between his singles and doubles play and advanced to the doubles semifinals with teammate junior Romain Jurd.
In the main draw, Herrera fell in the round of 16, to Duke's Ludovic Walter (6-3, 4-6, 1-6). Herrera had won five consecutive matches in convincing fashion, including a win over the No. 8 seed Marcus Westman of South Carolina, 6-2, 6-2. Westman held a preseason ranking of 89.
Jurd also made it to the round of 16 after winning five straight matches. Jurd fell to the eventual champion Roger Anderson of Georgia Tech by scores of 1-6, 1-6. Sophomore Chip Webb had his best performance of the fall season as he won four matches and advanced to the round of 32 in the main draw. Webb fell to the No. 15 seed David Bere of Wake Forest (1-6, 6-7).
In doubles action, the duo of Herrera/Jurd advanced to the semifinals of the doubles main draw before falling 7-9 to the eventual champion Csanadi/van der Merwe of Old Dominion.
Florida State had a solid fall season and the Seminoles are primed for a successful spring season. The Seminoles open the 2003 spring season on January 17 in Winston-Salem, N.C. at ACC Indoors.
