UNC's Nicole Reis recorded a match-high 22 kills as North Carolina won its third straight ACC Volleyball Championship with a 3-1 (30-20, 30-27, 28-30, 30-23) victory over Florida State Sunday afternoon at Tully Gymnasium. Three Lady Seminoles finished the afternoon with double-double's in Alex Sevillano, Erica Bunch and Jennifer Anderson.
The victory marked the first time North Carolina (23-7) has defeated Florida State in an ACC Championship match. North Carolina was previously 0-3 against the Seminoles.
"North Carolina really came in and played their best in the tournament," said FSU head coach Cecile Reynaud. "They showed up and their outside hitters knew every square inch of that court. It takes a great player to hit some of the shots they had. Laura Green and Nicole Reis both did that and they were very tough to stop. Their setter did a nice job, I don't think they missed very many serves. They had great digs throughout, and played very well. Today we saw a Top 25 team."
"I am very proud of this team the way they went through the tough schedule we played at the beginning of the year and to then come around and really put everything together. We have had a great time over the past few weeks."
Norisha Campbell led Florida State (17-12) with 18 kills. Alex Sevillano had 17 kills and a match-high 20 digs while Erica Bunch added 10 kills and 19 digs. Setter for the Tribe Jennifer Anderson compiled 55 assists and 14 digs.
Laura Greene had 17 kills and 15 digs for North Carolina. Malaika Underwood, the Tournament's Most Valuable Player, had four kills, nine assists, 14 digs and seven block assists in the match.
Already leading 1-0 in the match, North Carolina rallied to take the second game, 30-27. Down 14-6, the Tar Heels used a 15-6 run that concluded with a kill from Reis to take the lead for good at 21-20.
Florida State, up by as many as nine points in the third game, held off a North Carolina comeback to win 30-28. In game four, Reis had seven kills and Green added six as North Carolina broke an 8-8 tie with a 7-2 run to take control of the game and win the match.
