TULSA, Okla. – Sophomore Clint Bowles’ attempt to qualify for the main draw of the D’Novo All-American Championships for a second consecutive year fell short on Wednesday when he lost to New Mexico’s Graeme Kassautzki 6-4, 6-1.
“I thought that it was a good tournament for Clint,” FSU head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. “I thought that he played better each match and I think that it helped him get ready for the rest of the fall.”
Bowels’ is not done because he will team with partner, junior, Jean-Yves Aubone in the main draw of the doubles competition. The pair is ranked No. 12 in the country and hold the Florida State record for single season doubles victories with 28.
“I think they are pretty familiar with how they want to play and the strategy they’ll use,” Hultquist said. “I think they have very good chemistry and I think they can make a good run in doubles this week.”
Aubone earned a spot in the main draw of the singles tournament by being ranked No. 13 in the preseason. The Miami, Fla. native finished last season as an All-American and All-ACC performer. He used the momentum from his sophomore season to have a successful summer on the Futures tour winning one tournament and placing second in another. Aubone also played in qualifying for the U.S. Open in August winning his first round match.
“I think that [Jean-Yves] is one of the top players at this tournament,” Hultquist said. “I hope that he is able to progress far into the tournament and put himself in position to be one of the elite guys here.”
